That’s really interesting. I never heard of Unraid. I literally thought you were talking storage controller. So tonemapping was good with that setup? Any stuttering while watching on any clients?
tonemapping on the 8109u did not even flinch…
the i3-8109u with over 1000 points single core slower than the 11600 runs smoother and faster then the 11600…
makes no sense at all… the support is terrible on windows it seems.
I wonder if AMD would be a better option if you only use software transcoding on Windows? Bypass hardware altogether?
software is never better… power wise and performance wise…
Right. So, this is making me really think about keeping my 8700, upgrading my main system but building a smaller setup just for Plex…maybe with Unraid and use that 8700 and the GTX 1070 with it.
that would be the better option… i am really thinking about going the same way…
Ok, I think my long term strategy is set. I will most likely have to change up how I am storing and syncing media if I go to a secondary media system but I think an HTPC is what I need to build now. Damn, this is now getting expensive.
Is there a way to tell what hardware Plex is using for encoding? I have my GTX 1070 and a compatible CPU. It’s not apparent from the activity dashboard which one is being used. I wonder if the 1070 would be better than my Intel 8700.
GPU-Z will tell you your GPU load, which is something.
Process Explorer will show CPU and GPU per process too.
In my research, it appears the best move right now is to sit tight and wait for the 7mm Intel processors in the Alder Lake generation that are coming later this year. From a power consumption and core count perspective they will be in line with current Ryzen 9 processors.
That’s the play!
