Recommended passmark score for x265 transcoding, GPU transcoding

Hello,

I currently run a server with the Intel i3 540 CPU.
One x264 1080p transcode usually works fine, but two don’t and even a single x265 doesn’t.

What’s the recommended passmark score for a CPU that could transcode two x265 1080p (4-6 Mb/s) videos simultaneously?
Does Plex support GPU transcoding?

Thanks.

Well, not quite, but you know - it’s gotta come with tactical nukes.

If you simply MUST HAVE 265 and that other thing that will nail one foot to the floor - 4K - plan on having devices in your line up that can natively handle those things or it’s gonna be a constant beat down. Those things simply aren’t ready for prime time yet so come big or stay home.

PMS does not support any hardware-assisted transcoding on PC hardware. It will DirectPlay/DirectStream 4K/HEVC to appropriate 4K clients but on-the-fly transcoding really isn’t possible. My dual Xeon octo-core processor workstation just manages to do one of those.

If you’ve got 4K content and non-4K clients then use PMS’ Optimize function or Handbrake to create one that will DirectPlay. Same approach applies for non-4K content and non-4K clients.

PMS does transcoding best when it doesn’t do it at all (on-the-fly).
