Recommended Plex client/player devices

If 4k, HDR, or HD audio (atmos/dts-hd/etc) are important to whomever is making the decision;

currently the best and simplest answer is nvidia shield.

shield < hdmi > 4k/hdr/atmos receiver < hdmi > 4k/hdr tv

most anything else is currently a waste of time and money. (obviously this doesn’t apply to individual mobile clients)

Tekno,
I will disagree. AppleTV 4K HDR “just works” . Mine is plugged into my Onkyo and it’s fantastic. Can’t say that about the shield last I looked.

We can debate the finer points after the holiday? :smiley:

Chuck, the appletv 4k can pass through HD audio such as atmos now?

if not, then it still won’t play straight bluray or UHD rips without externally manipulating the files (ie removing or changing HD audio stream position) of the media file.

If ATV4k can now direct play unmodified UHD rips, then well the shield may well have some competition now.

I realize other people may have or had issue with shield, but when I got mine (at the start of the ver 7.x rollout), mine has worked perfectly with no issues with my system.

So shield also ‘just works’ and can directly play pretty much anything.

Not interested in Dolby Atmos in these areas.
These players are for 22-24" TV’s in cabins not much bigger than a broom cupboard! Each bunk (2 in each cabin) has 2 x Cat 6 cables, fiber and 230VAC power. However the power is for the TV, and the LAN cables for Ethernet and PoE for a small Plex device. Nvidia Shield is too big, ATV requires 110V/220VAC in (not VDC). The Cisco switch is big enough to provide 30W of power from each PoE port so potentially the Roku Ultra or an Android box could work as they are 12VDC in. Ideally a Smart TV would be best but as mentioned before there are literally 2 manufactures that make such a TV and they don’t fit. If its not a smart TV then any screen needs 2 HDMI’s in. One for Sat TV from centrally distributed Crestron NVX and one for a local Plex client device. Additionally the screen needs to have a sound jack or Bluetooth for headphones. The Roku Ultras remote has a headphone jack so that’s a good thing too. Last resort would be a Raspberry Pi 3 running Rasplex and a Bluetooth remote and therefore headphones also.

Any thoughts/experience with Android boxes (not Nvidia Shield) running Plex app?
