I am wondering, if there are recommended settings - as I believe a lot of not that technical experienced are interested in that, but I did not find a thread - please forgive me if there is one.
The stuff I am using is Apple TV 3 with newest iOS, a Synology DS214play, Samsung 1080p-TV ethernet and PlexConnect (sure).
Often, I get a problem that films are interrupted and Apple TV needs to buffer.
For example, I am not sure, which file-format is recommended. I am using mkv, mv4 and mp4. Is that ok? Which is the best to use? I learned that it is a good idea, to remuxx to less than 30 fps (with Handbrake), is that correct?
My settings in Plexconnect are:
- Transcoder: Automatic
- Transcoder Quality: 1080p 40 Mbps
- Away Bitrate: 1080p 8.0 Mbps
- Subtitle Renderer: iOS, PMS
Any thoughts on that? Any recommendations? Any reasons why I often have a problem with streaming?
File format is not important. The DS214play has enough speed to Direct Stream any of the existent containers (MKV, AVI, etc) to the ATV requirement (MP4 or M4V). The problem may be the video codec and/or the audio codec used in your films. See here what combinations of video+audio are supported by the ATV, and try to recode your media files accordingly. The DS214play can transcode 480p, but above that it may produce the symptoms that you are experiencing.
Do you need subtitles ? If yes, please do not let transcoder to be used. You need to use this method instead.
