Recording: Live TV - Session (Can it be disabled)

I subscribe to an IPTV service and have it set up on Plex Live TV. I share my television with my family, and despite the fact that I have it set to not record while they watch it, it states Recording: Live TV - Session. This is using my home’s bandwidth. Is it possible to disable this feature so that they only live stream and not record?

And, before anyone asks, I’ve turned off transcoding on the DVR.

@TSF_Movies You say that you’ve turned off transcoding on the DVR, that in itself should have told you the reason why it’s recording.

The reason it’s recording is that Plex provides a DVR service. DVR stands for Digital Video Recorder.

Notice the last word “Recorder” it means that even when watching live TV it’s recording as then you are able to pause and rewind. All DVRs do this.

Yes, I understand what DVR stands for, but I do not want the DVR option for other users on the account, only Live TV, because they do not live in the same house. As a result, whenever kids watch TV (even if the source is from somewhere else), the pause feature is always recorded, which I do not want them to have. This is simply because my ISP has a data cap, and if they watch TV all day, it depletes my data cap.

@TSF_Movies Then you have a choice between the following options:

  1. Stop using Plex DVR
  2. Get unlimited data from your ISP
  3. Change to a different ISP that does unlimited data

The above are the choices you have and that’s it.

Thank you for your help.

You also do realize that regardless if Recording or not, Live TV will ALWAYS go over your Server and thus using your Upstream connection?

I feel Plex should make Live TV auto-recoding configurable (albeit not for the OP’s reason) or start recording the session 5 / 10 seconds after Live TV playback has started.

I used the DVR function to record programs all the time (which works great) but the current implementation of Live TV is so clunky. There is always a noticeable delay for playback to start.

To give you an idea of the Live TV experience I strive for…

Briefly, enable the dreaded ad-support Live TV on Plex and flick through a few of their channels.

As it’s just a live stream being consumed (i.e. no recoding) the experience is infinitely better - zero delays when channel hopping and you event get channel switching on the in-guide preview!

If they can deliver that experience on Live TV on Plex, why can they not allow the same experience on standard Live TV?

@J_Strong The big difference between the DVR and the Plex channels are that the Plex channels are purely streams (not from Plex servers) and not live TV, therefore they will load quicker.

I’ve created a separate thread as the tuner is not the cause of the delay.

NB: Testing using the HDHomeRun application usually only takes roughly 1 second to display audio & video. Live TV in Plex (using the same tuner) usually takes a minimum of 4/5 seconds.
