Recovering from a total HDD crash

The HDD on my server crashed this morning. So far I have been unable to recover anything from it.

I have installed a new disk, reinstalled Windows and reinstalled PMS. Logging into my account Plex seems to know about all my libraries etc. but it thinks this is a different server even though the computer has the same name and is the same MAC address. I can’t even seem to add any new libraries to get access to any of the video (which is on a separate NAS drive).

Please, please can someone advise how I tell PMS to use this server but with the same libraries or, worst case, at least be able to add a new library to access the same videos. Thanks

You need to reset your web app, so it doesn’t use your old server anymore as its default server: https://support.plex.tv/articles/customizing-plex-web#resethome

I presume that loses all the content of the previous libraries including the art work and corrections where PMS has recognised the video/music incorrectly. Is there no other way to fix it?

In actual fact, last night while I was trying to retrieve at least something off the drive it suddenly fired back into life. I have put it back in the system unit and it is all running fine … at the moment! I am trying to perform a system image so that if it happens again I can restore to a new drive. I assume that will solve the problem of losing all the current data, is that correct or do I need to perform a different backup for PMS?

That was lost the moment when your old HDD crashed. There is no way to restore that, unless you previously made a backup of it.

Yes, if you can save all contents of the old Plex data folder

If you’re able to export the branch of the old Windows registry which stored the Plex server settings, you can also retain all your shares and the individual side bar and home page customizations of all your plex clients.

I had all the data backed up but not the Appdata. I am copying that now and will take a new backup of the registry.

Since reverting to the old HDD the web app recognises the correct PMS and I can see and use all the old folders. The 2 new ones I tried to create on the newly installed server yesterday are still there but now with no media (as expected). However, when I go to settings, every option within settings comes back a message “server settings unavailable”. I am therefore unable to remove the folders or server I created yesterday. Any idea why I can’t get at the settings?

I finally managed to get a disk image of the failing disk to complete successfully and have now installed a replacement HDD and copied the disk image back onto it. Pretty much everything is working correctly, including PMS and all the PMS data.

I tried to remove the temporary server I created on another drive as you suggested:

But it seems to tell me how to reset everything, not just remove the temporary server. I also can’t find the settings it points me to which may be why I can’t work out how to do it. Please can you tell me where I should be looking. Thanks.

The above instructions are necessary when you create a new server. They are necessary to tell the client that there is now a different server it ought to use as default.
The procedure has absolutely no influence on the server itself.

However, it appears you were able to restore the old registry branch.
So the above procedure is not necessary.
You might want to remove the server which was “seen” further in the past (the one you created during your first attempt) from your account in here: https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/devices/pms

I had looked at that but I was worried about removing one of the servers because they both have identical names, version numbers, windows build numbers etc. If remove the one showing as accessed 3 days ago and it is the same one as the one showing as accessed 5 hours ago will I lose everything?

No. Because the one you accessed most recently is the one you are using now.
IMHO, it doesn’t matter much whether you remove it now or wait another few days/weeks/months.
All it does, is appearing as a second server in your left side bar, when you switch it to the MORE view mode.

Thanks for your help.
