Reinstalling Plex Media Server on new PC without losing metadata like already played, etc

I’m looking to move my Plex Media Server from my old PC to my new one. When I’ve tried this in the past, I lost all my metadata such as already played, etc., I think because I couldn’t figure out a way to just point Plex to the previous folders that contained all my media (all stored on an external drive). So what ends up happening is Plex seems to reset itself and start a new library from scratch.

Is there a way to just point Plex Media Server to the original media folder without it having to reconstitute a new library from scratch?

Take a look at this guide:

Thanks for the info.

I’m not sure this will solve the issue, as it seems that Plex just doesn’t allow me to move my library from one computer to another (even if I give my new computer the same name as my old one).

I recently move my Plex from an older slower computer to a dual Xeon server. Early on, I decided to put all my Plex data on an SSD. In Plex, you can specify where the Plex data can reside (overriding the default location). When I moved the servers, I shutdown the old Plex on the old server. I installed Plex on the new server. Did not start it. Then I moved the data disks to the new server and assured they had the same disk letters as was on the old server. Then I moved the SSD from the old server to the new server. and assured it had the same disk letter as on the old server. Finally, and most important, I went into Regedit, found the registry key for Plex on the old server and exported the entire branch. I then imported the registry info to the new server. When I started the new server PMS, everything was as it was in the old server. All this is documented as stated above.

This was exactly what I was looking for… thanks!
