Remote Access

I know this question has been asked several times but I wanted to get your opinion this specific scenario. I’m trying to enable Remote Access but keep getting the “Not available outside your network” error. Here’s what I’ve tried:

  1. Manually specifying port on Plex and forwarding ports on my router
  2. Turning Firewall completely off on the router
  3. Restarting router and Plex server
  4. Disabling then reenabling uPnP on the router
  5. Traceroute only shows my private IP on the first line, the others are public IPs

I’m currently using a Modem/Router combo supplied by my ISP. When I gave them a call, they insisted that the issue is because I need a Static IP; however, I’m under the impression that Plex handles all that automatically and I should still be able to access my content remotely, even with a dynamic public IP. Is this correct?

I also read that people advised checking sites like canyouseeme.org to see if the port is open. Unfortunately, every port I try comes back with a “Connection timed out” error. Could this be related to the issue I’m having?

Ultimately, I’d like your opinion:

  • Does it sound like I have a Double-NAT situation and do I need to purchase a Static IP from my ISP?
  • Why are all my ports timing out when using canyouseeme.org?
  • Are there any other troubleshooting steps you would recommend?

Thank you!

I use a dynamic IP and setup port forwarding.

What are the first 3 octets of your “dynamic public IP”?

I have a dynamic IP. I am new to all this. This is my own internet connection that has a dynamic IP address. So what is an octet? I want to be able to go anywhere and install Plex Player and have access to my server.

@AJ66 can you create your own forum post and tag me in it and we can look at your issue individually.
