Shall I say it a 4th time then???
I… AM… OK… WITH… RAISING… PRICES..
Just do it in an honest and ethical way.
But by putting existing core functionality behind a paywall simply pisses people off!.. It’s the principle of it.

There is nothing unethical about charging for something that you chose to give away for free in the past. If someone gives you a sample of cheese in a supermarket they don’t then owe you free cheese for life.
Similarly Plex are under no obligation whatsoever to provide you with free software or services just because they did so in the past. The fact that you think this is some kind of “ethical” issue is wild. Amazing sense of entitlement. Software costs money.
And now for a 5th time…
I… AM…OK…WITH…RAISING…PRICES…
There’s really no need to repeat this silly statement again in capitals. You were making an argument that removing free functionality was somehow unethical, that’s what I was responding to and it seems that was abundantly clear to everyone except you.
I have a Lifetime Plex Pass, so the Update in the plex.tv/blog/ has no changes for me (and thanks Plex for that), but curious if that is the reason I didn’t get an email on the upcoming price changes that will effect those without a Plex Pass. There will be many unhappy Plex users if they miss the opportunity to buy a Lifetime Pass before the 108% price increase to $250
Pretty sure blog doesn’t get emailed out. A newsletter could have linked to these changes, but thus far hasn’t been mailed.
I mentioned earlier in the thread (at least I think I did), but the big issue I see is people thinking they need the remote streaming pass when they don’t (just due to the confusion of it all), and they end up paying forever.
Shoot, I know that I’m a fairly technical aware person but I’ve had subscriptions I forgot about that have cost me a fair amount of money over the years. It really ends up taking advantage of people who aren’t as technically literate.
Pitches the rocket money commercial. Lol
The article you’re referring to is 2 years old and was written 6 months before Plex laid off 20% of its workforce due to a downturn in revenue. I wouldn’t be relying on it as any sort of indicator about how well (or not) Plex is doing financially.
More to the point, how well they are or aren’t doing is irrelevant. Apple has more money than several countries but nobody’s arguing that iPhones should be cheaper just because they can afford it. Prices are set according to demand and businesses operate to make money not to make freeloaders happy.
So the service I have already paid for, they are now removing and forcing me to pay extra for AFTER they sold me the software… Hell no.
I think you’re confused. If you’d already paid for the service there would be no need to pay for the service.
If you paid for plex pass lifetime as you claim then nothing changes and you umbrella all your users under your plex pass to your server. If you mean the one time playback for mobile devices that was $6 you didn’t pay for software you paid to use a feature and if you read you’ll get to trial the remote watch pass. ToS can and does change as does pricing models well unsolicited you agreed to these changes. If you’re not satisfied leave no one is stopping you.
Claiming subscription status as PI as a redirect for being a giant toolbox in the forums complaining about a platform change, while classifying yourself as a power user, when you yourself are in fact not supporting the platform in the first place…
Not a good look.
I’ve haven’t gotten Sonos to work since Sonos changed their infrastructure last year. I have to airplay to Sonos devices.
Didn’t Sonos basically nuke itself bricking devices in a firmware update.
Music and photos won’t be affected by the price change or plex pass requirement for remote access.
I don’t think the people in the back heard you yet ![]()
I guess I’m still unclear despite the wordy announcement. I make my library available to a few family members who’ve installed the PLEX app on their smart TV’s. With this change, as I understand I have to buy a Plex Pass if I want to continue to share my library with them. Correct? As far as the Remote Streaming Pass, does that mean THEY (family members) must buy that if they want to access my library? Or does that mean I have to buy that if I want to continue to remote-stream to them? If it’s the latter, I would go with the cheaper option, since I’m not interested in a full-fledged Plex Pass.
One reason I’ve held off on buying a PLEX pass for so long is because I and a few others have suggested MINIMAL improvements over the past few years (like including a performer or crew member’s library of works over both TV and Movies – right now it’s walled off; you get one or the other, not both), and another is a very simple feature that works on ROKU (“Remove from Continue Watching”) but is unavailable on any other device. If the team is too dismissive to take care of incidental improvements like that, why should I consider them worthy of $120+ (not to mention $250)? Just my opinion.
@woofbow If you have plex pass as the pms admin you umbrella them under your plex pass. If you still don’t want a plex pass you can enable remote but in order for anyone to watch it they either need plex pass or the remote watch pass. Locally over lan it’s free. Alternative is to setup a vpn server on your router or system using pms that way when users login to the vpn from the client on their phones or laptops they can appear as local to your network. Drawback is IoT devices like a firestick would have a harder time setting up a vpn client on.
