@Alteren8371thx for clarifying. no way can I ask them to pony up since I share out of goodwill.
When I connect to my server, I donât use any plex.tv domain though. I connect directly to my server with my own domain though nginx routing. Itâs basically no different than hosting a website on my server.
That is my question - if Iâm not using Plex infrastructure for announcing my server or any of their proxying, what would change (or break)? The software will start sniffing packets/headers and actively reject if they detect requests are originating from a non-local network IP?
@long2know Users regardless of how you have your domain and proxy setup have to login with the plex authentication server. If they donât resolve on your pms servers local ip subnet and external gateway ip they are considered remote. So any external ip should eventually require a plex pass under the admin or users with plex pass or remote watch pass. Thatâs as much as I know.
But then the announcement says photos and music arenât affected. This implies that usage of Plexâs authentication services is continuing to be free.
Iâm just wondering about the technical aspects, implementation, and what it really entails. If Iâm sitting in a coffee shop and use Chrome to browse to https://myhomeserver.com, and my server is on the free tier, whatâs going to happen? What if I never upgrade my server software?
Explained in the FAQ if you donât upgrade your client or canât it will continue to work up until some point they change that due to updates in the pms server. When that will happen is anyoneâs guess Iâm sure for compatibility reasons it wonât be discontinued anytime soon. But they reserve the right I believe to sunset older clients and servers.
Nothing different will happen. When you navigate to your domain youâre required to login if using the webui. You can leave remote enable but who can play video will depend on if they have plex pass or remote watch pass. If you login from your domain likely youâll get your dashboard but be unable to play anything besides music and view photos.
Right. Straight B.S.
I just wanted to take a moment and just say Iâm not for supporting the changes. I just rather the app stay the same. It has always worked fine. I donât need anything complex or anything more. I mean, we do the transcoding on our server and direct streaming from our server to our users so I didnât see no reason to pay more. I donât support the changes. Iâm glad I bought the one time fee and be done with it.
With a reverse proxy, you have to set the Custom URL field so the apps can reach your server. They said in this thread that Custom URL option will be a premium only option too, so that wonât work either.
I have my own domain, own DNS record, own reverse proxy, I obtained an ssl cert for it. What infrastructure?
I would understand a fee for Relay, but this is for remote streaming as a whole. Even if you do everything on your own and use a reverse proxy. Because they said the Custom URL field is gonna be a premium feature too⊠They are just greedy assholes.
The Plex apps have development costs, and costs running the authentication service. Thatâs essentially what the small Remote Access sub is covering.
Whatâs âgreedyâ about Plex asking you to pay for software and their service?
Would rather see them go back to charging a fee for the client apps then vs an ongoing (forever) subscription model fee.
To be fair, the read over on reddit is always hostile. Supporting something controversial Plex does? Hostile. Disagreeing with something Plex does? Hostile. Asking a basic question? Hostile. Helping answer a basic question? Hostile. r/Plex is one of the most hostile subs Iâve ever seen.
Itâs â â â â â â â greedy to put features behind a paywall that existed for free for MANY years. My remote streaming setup costs them ZERO cents more than my local streaming one. Only thing is authentication. My remote connections are direct, yet I still wonât be able to stream remotely, because Custom URL field is gonna be put behind a paywall too.
Itâs not about the price increase or about putting new features behind a paywall, itâs about putting already existing free features behind one.
So all I see here is one of many users who, for years, has gotten amazing software for freeâincluding regular updates to the server software and clients, plus a stable API with high availability thatâs had virtually no outagesâand now expects that just because this has been tolerated for years, itâll stay that way forever.
Why this selfish, entitled attitude?!
The API is more than just authentication. Where do you think all those agent mappings come from? Of course, they work with providers in the background to supply that data, but that infrastructureâalong with the clientsâstill needs to be developed further, and some of those API accesses come with costs too.
Iâm sure youâve spent money on way dumber things in your life. Maybe think about whether it makes sense to support the development with a ONE-TIME PURCHASE instead of making a big fuss here about something changing.
(You could probably even keep using the remote feature without server/client updatesâdepending on where Plex implements the limitationâor, you know, just be fair and support the development.)
Sorry for asking but one thing is still unclear for me:
I own a Lifetime Plex Pass and my wife is in my Plex home. She uses her own credentials to stream on her iPhone (part time remotely) and iPad or Apple TV (local).
Does she need any part of Pass or is she covered by my Lifetime Subscription?
Im a happy owner of plex pass and been using plex for ages.
Would LOVE to see extra features for Plex pass owners and upgrade for some cool extra extra features to even support plex more .
Keep up the good work !
They are making remote access a paid feature, not everything else. Everything else uses that API, not just remote play. Why not make the whole thing paid at this point if itâs about their infrastructure costs? Local users and remote play users (who have their own domain, certificates, etc) cost them THE SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY. Local users also use the authentication and other parts of the API. Properly set up remote streaming costs them zero cents more than local streaming.
I believe that being in a Plex home that has the Pass gives your account all the benefits of the pass itself. I donât think that it has been specifically laid out, but since being in a PP Home gave you all other benefits, I would be confident in saying that you should be able to stream remotely on her account as well.
My setup is the same. Sounds like they are greedy and only spending their dev time to further that cause without any tangible benefit.
I donât even use the remote streaming features for videos, but this crippling of existing software for a cash grab really bothers me
