And your point? They are making remote streaming paid, not the software. They have zero cost differences between a local streaming and a remote streaming user if the user doesn’t use their relay
Report a problem to Plex and see how it goes. Mobile downloads have been broken for years now. They barely fix bugs
Not remotely
It’s the exact same thing, I use my bandwidth, not theirs, and they still decide to restrict it.
For me it is the combination of raising pricing and removing „watch together“. Offering less for more. I also do not trust them that the money will go to development. It will only go to profit. It all does not matter to me. I already paid ages ago and without „watch together“
Plex is pretty much useless for me. I will check in a year for awesome new feature but I doubt that will happen.
New users to Plex absolutely can test plex.. what are you on about?
Plex will still work over LAN and playback won’t cost on mobile devices now.
If users or pms admins want to test remote access they can temporarily subscribe to plex remote watch pass or plex pass.
If you want to test remote access without paying anything as a pms admin then use a VPN server from either your plex machine or router should it support vpn servers.
Further remote access will Not require a plex pass for music or photos.
OK, this is useful. Thank you
So I have a Lifetime Plex Pass and my own server. My kids who do not live at home will be able to access my media remotely without having to buy a Plex re Remote Watch Pass or be forced to use a VPN.
Correct.
Thanks, saw all the media fuss this morning with lots of conflicting discussions on YT, it just had me concerned for a moment there.
No problem. Media outlets like to spin news for clicks. This change isn’t going to make everyone happy, but isn’t as overblown as they make it seem.
Uh, no? It only impacts remote streaming. There are lots of people who use Plex only for local in-home playback to start with, due to home internet issues (low upstream speed, double-NAT).
I only got started in media servers for an easy way to watch digital content on a big screen without having to build a separate HTPC to connect to the living room TV. I used my blu-ray player as a DLNA client to stream from a PC in another room. Watching stuff outside the home wasn’t even in my mind then.
Has Plex sent an email about the changes to its users?
I have a Lifetime Plex Pass and read about the Plex Blog Post announcement on Reddit (then on the various “news” outlets), so I know there is no effect to me, but it would have been better PR if Plex sent an email first to users (or maybe they did, and mine got lost in my spam folder)
I agree with a lot of your points. Looking at the price increase if they just adjusted it for inflation the price would by $160 for a lifetime pass. I think the cap should have been $200 at most. $250 is a bit high right off the bat.
Reading this thread, and a lot of other ones, I really don’t think people comprehend how few people stream their own media compared to their ad-based offerings. It pails in comparison. Hell, I have my own server and I watch a lot of soccer from their ad-based channels. My in-laws finally, after years of me asking them and offering up use of my content, downloaded Plex to their TV and only watch ad supported stuff. We are in the minority. 16 million MAUs for their ad supported content is huge. Accept it and move on.
For me, I bought a lifetime because of Plexamp. There is nothing like it and my family uses it all the time. If they screw Plexamp up then I will be gone.
I have been fortunate that a lot of bugs people have been coming across hasn’t affected me at all. HW transcoding has been great, I use a 13 old SFF desktop which surprises me how well it works. Mobile downloads have never been a problem. Even though things have been good for me Plex should really focus on fixing bugs. Maintenance isn’t sexy, but it is vital to keep a software company in business.
Seems like the goal is to drive monthly revenue vs sell lifetime passes. If your really want a lifetime they will leave option out there - but make it really unattractive to do so. Sounds like a deliberate pricing strategy to me.
Agreed
Now that the dust has settled and after reading through this thread, I have learned a few things:
-
A new word “enshittification”. Sounds like something created by a 17-year-old living in their parent’s basement sipping $7 Starbucks oatmeal lavender lattes waiting for the next PlayStation to be released.
-
Plex is doomed to failure and guilty of corporate greed for raising prices after 10 years of no increases when everything else in this world has gotten more expensive. It seems the posters here know far more about how to keep Plex viable for the future than the dumb Plex management who knows how the company functions.
-
“I watch my content, which I own (no copyright violations, of course), how dare Plex charge for using their software and maintaining it”. Really?
-
Jellyfin is way better than Plex but somehow those people promoting it and using it as a threat are still in this forum wasting their time angry Plex is increasing prices. Why are you still here?
-
I think this is obvious, but the people complaining here either don’t understand basic concepts, didn’t fully read the Plex 2025 updates message before creating mass confusion and throwing a fit, or expect everything in life to be free. I read the memo, and it was crystal clear to me.
All I know is I have been a Plex Pass holder since 2018 and I am completely satisfied, maybe I am doing something wrong. The drama here is remarkable. I think I will buy some extra Plex Passes to make up for all of you leaving this great product for Jellyfin.
To all the Plex employees reading this thread and laughing, just know that you do have rational, unentitled supporters and keep up the great work!
I bought the Lifetime about 6 years ago as I liked the UI and was using it a lot.
Then I used Plexamp, and received that benefit, then Plex made Plexamp free, so there’s that. Then a few months ago I decided to get an OTA and HDHR and Plex DVR works great, so I now have that Plex Pass benefit.
I’m happy that Plex has a one-time cost (and they have honored it) as I really hate subscriptions.
Compared to the price increases by the Streamers (Netflix, Hulu, etc), and the increased commercials in the lowest tiers, the cost of a Plex Pass at $120 is reasonable, and while the 108% increase to $250 is a but much, the only ones complaing have to be current users, and they should either decide to buy a Lifetime Pass now, or switch to Jellyfin. No amount of complaining will change anything.
Yes according to plex support whom I emailed in regards to this question say that a newsletter was emailed also out on Wednesday. However it might have only been sent out to those that were affected meaning anyone without plex pass or on plex pass monthly. I have lifetime so I didn’t get the email.
I didn’t receive an email either, but I think that’s because I have, “Unsubscribe from all,” ticked on the https://www.plex.tv/email-preferences/ options.
Mines all on for relevant information.
I had Product News Unsubscribed, so that explains why I didn’t get one.
