Remote streaming will be a Plex Pass feature

I have a Plex Pass and received the email.

Those who didn’t receive it probably had unsubscribed as noted by @Tony_T.

It’s very similar attitudes displayed to when pFsense split into community and commercial editions. Lots of vitriol and people shouting they were going to run off to Opensense. The dust settled, some left, but most stayed, and life continued.

They don’t charge for using their software. They charge for remote streaming, which was free for ages before, and it’s not a concern for their budget or infrastructure costs, since there is no cost difference for Plex for local vs remote streaming if the user doesn’t use their Relay…

If you did not know, many Plexamp features require Plex Pass. So it isn’t like the Pass is now valueless for a Plexamp fan.

Your attempt to belittle those who disagree with you doesn’t help your argument.

I have had my pass since 2012. I would gladly give them more money to provide a version without all the crap in it. It is slow, transcoding atmos is a no go no matter how much hardware you throw at it. You have to have a connection to the internet to watch local content (hard to configure otherwise). Internet out and you want to watch local content .. nope. I switched to emby a few years ago. Its faster and easier by far .. like how plex used to be. Its player isnt as good but if you you infuse player on apple TV it is perfect. The nail in the coffin for me was them selling all the information about your library and what you watch to whoever. Everyone that I have known that used it doesn’t use it anymore.

I bought lifetime today because of the convenience for my family and friends to only have to enter a four digit code to access my content. The hassle of other platforms from my family point of view is a big factor.

plex vs jellyfin

live tv via tv tuner card = plex wins
privacy = jellyfin wins hands down
transcoding = works great on both, free on jellyfin
library management = equal
no “call back” so you can run a server completly offline for privacy = jellyfin
music server = jellyfin hands down. There are multiple apps that work hand in hand with jellyfin for use with apple carplay and android auto.
I used plex for years, then jellyfin, then both because my tv tuner card didnt work with jellyfin.
Time to buy an hdhomerun which works with jellyfin fine and leave plex for good.
Not because of the money, because of the data they collect on you and your users.

Pretty mich this. Some people claim plex has much more and better features and is way easier to setup and use. That is absolutely not my experience.
I feel people like me are just no longer the target audience for plex. Which is fine, but I am disappointed.

This is the line and the line has been crossed.
Goodbye Plex.

Dang. I snatched up the lifetime pass a few years back at $50.

I wonder how many of the people screaming about actually have to pay a little for a service they use all the time also pay $6 a month for Spotify, $18 a month for Netflix, $9 a month for Amazon Prime, and who knows what else. You can pay a one time fee of about $120 and you and whoever you share with will never pay a dime again. Give me a break.

You’re using plex wrong. Under your primary profile if your the pms admin you can set it automatically for login under settings.

If you don’t want them under HOME don’t invite them under HOME just grant access to them to your libraries. That way they won’t appear under your managed home profiles and you won’t have to pin protect your profile.

lol so which one is better?

Seems people dont like coming out their pocket and expect everything to stay free forever. Get over it El-Cheapo and buy yourself a plex pass and be done. Everyone screamin Jellyfin will be sorry bc Yes its free and But the UI sucks bad. So have fun in free world. I also have a lifetime sub to Emby but retired Emby last year bc its just slow loading a big library and IMO its not as polished as Plex

Just to be clear here, I’m not just mad because I “have to pay for something instead of getting it for free” as many people are reducing all the complaints to. As you can tell, I’m a Plex Pass subscriber, so I’ve already paid. I’m mad because Plex keeps charging more while removing features and fixing none of the issues that have plagued the service for years. For all of that development that everyone justifies the cost increases, I’m not getting a better experience, I’m getting a worse one. Every single time there’s an update I get a worse experience. From arbitrarily deciding to email all my friends what I’m watching, to changing the poster images for the worse, to removing the Watch Together feature that barely worked to begin with, to never bothering to fix the issues plaguing the service forever like Downloads not working right, or the app constantly crashing or freezing on iOS… but thank God they’re making their investors happy.

I’m not going silently. I used to recommend Plex all the time (despite its flaws) to friends, family, and strangers. That word of mouth will now dissuade prospective new customers from the service, and I’m not the only one. Word of mouth works both ways.

“If they actively try to prevent vpn use now that’s another line people would be angry with.”

Oh that would be an instant switch from me off of plex to an competitor. But I don’t think that using your own vpn or tailscale would be againt TOS would it? Since you aren’t relying on their servers to bridge your connection and you are doing it on your own. Can an plex moderator confirm or deny that using an vpn or tailscale would be against TOS when these changes happen?
