Remote video direct play

Direct Play and Stream are enabled on the remote side  (not on local network) and I have a 5Mbps upload on my home network.

Audio is being Direct Streamed. But video is not. Video is h.264 and Direct Plays on local network.

why can audio direct stream and video cannot? it is only a 3GB file for a 2 hour movie so my upload speed can keep up.

thoughts?

Does the remote side of a quality limit selected that is below the video's bitrate?

The Plex Media Server.log should have entries just before the transcoder starts on why the streams are being transcoded.

Probably this --> https://forums.plex.tv/topic/154001-directplay/#entry884430

Basically, the h264 video must be level 4 or lower or it will transcode, regardless of bitrate/size.  A lot of videos are at level 4.1, which is how I ripped all of my videos.  There could be a limitation on reference frames too (I know the Roku has that) but I couldn't find any info.

Devs know that the video can actually be played directly on most cases, and are working on a fix or work-around.

That's a possibility, but then it would transcode when the op tries to play locally.  Since they're able to direct play locally it more than likely would be a setting on the remote end.
