Removal of Free EPG service - Not Happy

click any country and you can skip that screen. it doesnt really matter if you are using your own EPG data

Received another email stating the EPG was being removed from Australia, and that Plex was recommending ICE TV.

If Aus wasn’t being removed, then why strike up a deal with ICE TV? :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Well now I’m confused. I received a mail this evening saying I had to move XMLTV and that Australia was losing the metadata - see below from the support article linked in the email

Note (March 23, 2019) : By the end of June 2019, Plex will be making a change to its metadata provider that supplies program guide data for our Live TV/DVR feature. It will impact the following countries:

  • Losing Coverage : Australia, Belize, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Ukraine, United Arab Emeirates

From this I’m taking it that the post that Australia was going to continue to be supported is no longer the case and we either need to now pay IceTV an additional subscription for something we used to get as part of plex pass; or use the inferior free services instead?

WTF! Talk about a bait and switch. Only bought life time Plex because of the EPG that was included.

Now I’m forced to either use an inferior free EPG, or pay the equivalent of what I’ve already paid to ICETv. Thanks a lot guys.

I’m a bit confused about what is happening in Australia as @DaveBinM stated in the link below that Australia was to keep their EPG data and now I’ve received an email saying it’s going

Big WTF from me also. Got the email about Australia a few hours ago and I’m not at all happy after a Plex employee in this very post stated that it was not going away for Australia

I just signed a family member up for lifetime last week because the EPG data was staying for Australia. They signed up for DVR and now they will lose this. Pretty poor

That’s not what my email from Plex that I just received tells me. What’s the story?

I got the same email today, I’d been following this thread that it wasn’t being removed for Australia. I signed up for lifetime Plex pass when they offered DVR services, bought a compatible tuner, now seems to be an extra $2.99 with iceTV for that ā€˜lifetime’ service.

There are protections in Australia against someone not providing what was purchased as advertised. I’m hoping Plex has considered this and will adapt their approach.

Not happy.

Got the same email over night.

LIke many others I bought a Plex Pass (and at full price stupidly) expecting that the service as described was for life,

The Plex Pass page still list metadata as part of the blurb.

Live TV and DVR

Hook your local Plex Media Server up to a compatible tuner and digital antenna to let you watch and record free, over-the-air broadcasts available in your area. Record content into your library to gain all the benefits of other content: beautiful metadata, access anywhere and any time, and more. Or watch content live, wherever you are, on tons of devices.

The so called negotiated three month deal with IceTV isn’t a great deal (I can get 3 months for free as a non Plex user) and we then end up paying for something we had as part of a prior commercial agreement.

Plex should at a minimum grandfather in those that already have a Plex Pass or provide two tier Plex Pass pricing - one including EPG data, on excluding. I am happy to get a partial refund for my Plex Pass to make up for the extra cost I am now expected to incur.

Also not happy as it was one of the reasons I bought lifetime plex pass and so did the father in law.

Hi DaveBinM,
Can we have an updated email confirming Australia wont lose this free service we paid for with our subscriptions and that it was an incorrect email?looking on the icetv site seems to back up what’s happening as well.
Thank you

Also not happy, just bought a lifetime Plex pass for this

Clearly you have some answering to do Mr Dave.

This is a big thing, you might lose heaps of Plex Pass customers that you haven’t hooked with a special lifetime pass with deception/

Ummm - are you sure? I just received the email from Plex (12 June) saying I must change to XMLTV … I am NOT paying for another service Dave.

I think the important sentence is "Plex will be making a change to its metadata provider for our Live TV EPG "

One can only speculate why or why they’ve chosen to be so vaigue.

Problems for consideration:

  • Plex now suggest spending ~$36 per year up from zero to achieve previous feature parity
  • DVR has been unstable for ~9 months starting 1.13.8.5395 / Sep 2018.
  • USA unaffected by this yet priced ~ the same as AU ($119USD vs $111USD)

Then there’s Tidal, another paid feature no one asked for.

This is a bait and switch. I’d say Australian lifetime customers will be lining up for a refund.

If only, that is the SPECIAL PRICING

From https://www.icetv.com.au/plex-subscription/ the special pricing $3 per month per year.

That said, however, it’s that price per region - so say you had a Plex box in Sydney, and one in Brisbane, you’d need to pay $3 per month per year PER LOCATION.

Confirmation at: https://support.icetv.com.au/hc/en-us/articles/227077127-Will-one-IceTV-subscription-work-with-more-than-one-digital-video-device-

I just tried the Free EPG from http://freepg.tv/ however the IceTV one is superior, with not all channels seeming to map correctly from freepg. (edit: you can manually map some of the channels to get more to work, Sydney guide seems more thorough than Melbourne)

Money back option is where …?

Sorry I’m not sure what you mean. Australian’s are offered protection against this kind of behaviour by vendors.

If Plex go ahead with this change I would first contact Plex via their normal support channels and escalate as necessary in your state or territory if not happy with their response.
