[Request] Allow higher resolution for direct playback (if within bandwidth limit)

My situation:
I’m converting a lot of my video library to 1080p x265 at around 2MB/s

My Plex “Remote access” settings:
Limit remote stream bitrate [4mbps (720p)]

My issue: (and I’m assuming it works this way based on the settings)
Even tho the bitrate of the HEVC file is well within the bandwidth limit, Plex will convert every remote playback based on the resolution.

My suggestion:
Allow remote playback of higher resolution files if the bitrate is within the set bandwidth limit.
If the bitrate is higher than the set bandwidth limit, transcode.

So change the setting to 1080 at 12Mbps.

Plex reads the Peaks and Valleys.
If the Peaks go outside the limits - transcode.

Are you sure that HEVC file will play on the remote device?

Also - there is a whole Sub-Novel to this all encompassing thread wherein this very thing is under investigation - of sorts…:

Peaks and Valleys.

Not to mention this request has been going for a while:

The server should control the remote client quality - but it doesn’t.
So, if setting that remote client isn’t something that is easily done.
(like if your Grandmother is on the other end)
That’s when the problem starts.

First off, I appreciate the effort you’re putting in to your reply.

Now for my answer(s)

HEVC is supported on the device

I know I can set the bandwith to 1080p 8/12Mbps.
The reason I don’t want to do that is / what I’d like it to do is:
If it has to encode, encode it to 720p/4Mbps not more.

My request is mainly because I don’t want to “bog down my system with transcodes” as the other user stated if it’s not necessary. And I understand that granny on the other end can still mess this up, but I haven’t given up on enlightening my plebeian users

In the end it’s not a massive problem, I just think it’s a waste of resources to transcode every file when it’s not necessary.

Good luck.
