Now that you’re using your own video player in the Apple TV beta app, is it possible to enable audio passthrough for advanced users? I’d love to be able to stream DTS-MA and TrueHD directly to my receiver to decode.
If this isn’t possible due to restrictions on the Apple TV, would it be possible to send an uncompressed PCM stream from the Plex server to the Apple TV on local networks? Right now when I play a video with TrueHD, the audio stream gets converted to AAC. The Audio Configuration Guide doesn’t mention if the AAC stream is lossless, just that it is the most compatible.
As an advanced user with high-end audio equipment, I’d really like the highest quality output available. I’ve valued the convenience of the Apple TV interface over quality, but with the new player it seems possible to have my cake and eat it too!
It is not possible to bitstream DTS-MA and TrueHD from the Apple TV. Hopefully they will add transcoding to PCM like you said. MrMC and Infuse already do this (and thankfully have plex integration built-in). I would probably switch back to the Plex player if they added this.
Interestingly, Firecore says that Infuse used to allow passthrough of DTS until a bug in tvOS 11.3. I didn’t know that Infuse works with Plex now… I’ll have to check that out! Thanks.
Honestly, the Infuse app is impeccable. I’ve been playing blu-ray rips for years, and it is by far the most reliable experience I have ever had. The developers are very responsive to. Hopefully the official Plex app will provide the same solid experience in the near future.
