Hi, I’ve got the latest Apple TV 4K in 32GB with TVOS 11.2 (with the AVDisplayManager), the ShieldTV and Xbox One X.
None of these devices are able to support both audio and video passthrough settings.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I do have the option to enable advance configuration settings on the Xbox and AppleTV.
My AV Processor has a 4K passthrough HDMI 2.0 board and my projector is a Sony 4K VW300ES.
PMS version 1.11.0.4666-fc63598ba (unRAID)
What I need is simple:
I want the AppleTV Menu to be in 4K@60Hz (also for the Xbox One X)
I have a Bluray ripped in 1080p and true 24p with HD Audio and the new 3D Audio (Atmos etc.).
And it shall be passthrough to my processor.
And not upscaled to 4K@60Hz and the audio decoding should be done on the processor.
Same thing if I have a 4K movie with 24p.
It seems to me thats on the video settings side, its a Plex software issue. And on the audio side, royalties?
At least you should provide the audio option for your plex pass user. Infuse does it for less than half the price!!!
On the ShieldTV the passthrough works almost flawlessly with DTS-HDMA and Dolby TrueHD but the refresh rates and resolution are still not passthrough.
It seems to me that Plex doesn’t care much about features that matters most for AV entusiast.
Kodi is capable of doing that on the ShieldTV and its free…
Please tell me at least that you are working on these kind of settings and help me understand why this is so difficult to achieve??? What I just describeb works perfectly on the Oppo UDP 203 with the DLNA PMS.
Hi @ShieldKino, your timing on this is spot on as I was just in the middle of documenting this (the customer impact and a potential approach to achieve this) in our internal issue system. Also, love your username! Some might think this is just me using multiple accounts to create an interesting conversation ;).
For the tvOS app, we use Apple’s native player API (which Infuse does not). There’s a lot of discussion in the forums about that, so I won’t go into great detail on that other than to say that we have raised it internally and from what I’ve gotten I don’t see us making our own player for tvOS anytime soon. I’ve heard there are trade-offs, but I never like to say never. Engineering has worked on (and continues to do so) on improving the playback experience on tvOS, particularly with H.264, 4K, and HDR. Ok, back to HD audio passthrough… it’s not natively supported in tvOS. There’s a potential workaround we are exploring for getting around the device’s native limitations, and that involves LPCM as you mentioned. The technique is called DD-WAV and what is done is the packets are wrapped in the same packet you would see on the TOSLINK when passthrough is used to send the data to the OS as PCM. It’s possible the same can be done for DTS-HD and TrueHD. The Apple TV would be sending LPCM to the AVR, supporting uncompressed audio up to 7.1 channels. I’ve submitted this internally and hope to see it go somewhere, though I can’t provide any guarantees as all feature request are triaged by engineering based on complexity, demand, workload, priorities, etc.
Regarding HD audio passthrough on the SHIELD, the Plex app (and others) do that now as Android TV supports this natively. Refresh rate issues should have improved in the last fee release as the Android team has been working on that.

Infuse and MrMc works with Plex and does most things right, including DTS. I’d recommend them.
Thanks NiclasU for the tip. Infuse works way better!
Upvote for audio passthrough on the Apple TV 4k. Janky that I pay Plex every month to stream but then I have to pay Infuse every month to listen & watch. Atmos audio is pretty much THE standard now. Time for you guys to get on board…
