Requirements to build 4k capable server

Hey guys !

i’m currently using a Synology DS416play for my plex server. But it is not capable to transcode on the fly any movie in x265 (same with small bitrates). So i would like use my NAS as sotrage and build a strong server aside.

I aim transcoding on the fly without any suttering a 4k hevc 10 bits…
But i don’t know which cpu or gpu (for hardware acceleration) buy ?

I saw that gtx 960 is a good start, but she is becoming pretty old to build new server…

Would it not be best to avoid 4K trans codes? A TV or box at the TV that can handle your 4K content would be a better result.

I just need to transcode when i m not at home.
Cause my bandwith in upload is not big enough for 4k content and same for good 1080p sometimes (i have only 20 mbits to share with 5-7 People with 2 People using a lot torrents…)

But yeah, i could pre transcode my 4k movies (they will not be payable outside with my bandwith anyway).
So, maybe getting a solid 1080p server could be the Best choice ? And get a double of 4k contents in 1080p…

Yes you have a few options available.

  1. Libraries of different resolutions
  2. Hardware solutions for 4K at Home
  3. Better Internet connection
  4. Plenty storage ( My choice non NAS)

I personally don’t have a lot of issues with 4K because I understand my Hardware limitations and respect my financial input ratio to entertainment experience gained. Yes I have dreams of better audio but believe that will come soon enough with smart TV’s and eArc.

My modest setup:
i5 iMac, Ethernet Cat 6 Gigabit, 2018 LG65OLED, 3 recent iPads, 50/20 Internet connection, USB 3 External hard drives, HDHomeRun, HD Netflix and HD Fox sports.

  2. Currently 4k is ok with direct play, i can easily accept 1080p outside
  3. I already have Best connection in my country (400/20) so It s my limit…
  4. I already have 20 tb and i have only 200 300 gb remaining… So re encoding to x265 could make a huge difference, mostly for 4k contents i guess

So yeah, i ll dont care about 4k transcoding anymore. Generate a 1080p version from 4k is Best choice i guess, and i ll save money :slightly_smiling_face:
I juste have to look for New server that could handle x265, should be cheaper ^^
