Restoring Older Verisons of Plex app on IOS

For some reason, the app update was enabled even after I had turned it off, which caused the Plex app to update to its recent, unpleasant new version. I looked for a way to revert the update on my iPhone and found a solution. Thankfully, my iPad didn’t have the update enabled, so I used a program called iMazing to export the app from my iPad. I then created a backup of my iPhone and used iMazing to edit the backup. I installed the older version of the Plex app onto the backup using the ‘Copy to Device’ feature. Finally, I ran the restore process, and voilà—it worked! I’m back in business. You can also edit and import backups from icloud or on your computer so if you have one just grab the old plex app off them.

thanks for posting this seems like a bot of a long process but still.

@Tenrai-Sensei iMazing is A-Mazing. I have used it to save my bacon numerous times when apps have suddenly disappeared from the store.

ProTip: On your AppleTV (if you have one) just disable App and OS auto-upgrades (separate settings). At least for us maintaining apps manually will be easy, we only have a handful. Staying on this OS version will not be a longterm solution, but hopefully the apps will have the kinks worked out and be non-terrible by that point.

Same thing just happen to my iphone. I had already updated my ipad to try it but was getting ready to use this to revert my ipad, and that’s when I found out my phone updated. I’m able to install the testflight 8.46 version thankfully. This new version is such trash and embarrassing that they put it out.

Grabbed the copy of the plex app off the iPad and saved it to the PC as plex.imazingapp but can’t seem to restore it without getting an insufficient space error - even after checking the box that says to erase the device?

is that for the backup on the PC? you can designate the where the backup is to be stored in the settings i had to change mine to an external hard drive. Make sure your pc has enough space else you’ll keep getting the error

definitely is trash not just from a bug standpoint but also UX design wise its terrible. if you have a backup on ios from ipad or iphone with the plex app on it you can use the program to extract from backups

No, the backup part works fine. It’s restoring back to the iPhone where it’s failing.

It’s honestly pretty sad when we have to resort to posts like this in the forum because of how bad Plex’s release has been and the fact they haven’t responded to tons of people asking for the old app to be made available!

hmm that weird i click erase the device fully for it to work. you might have to turn of some iphone setting like find my device cause that prevents you from wiping the device. Also make sure you have logg in to your cell phone carrier because you have to redownload your esim to get signal back

The New interface is awful. I want to go back to the old version. How can I remove plex picks, on demand from the plex ios app? I only want to see my libary like before.

Yeah I’m hearing ya. I can’t see, add or edit my friend list. Just crazy.
If they want to remove a setting, fine. But let people turn it back on if they still want it!

Plex team should listen to what people want and bring the old Plex version as legacy option for those that want it.

If I have the new version on both my iPad and iPhone, is there anything I can do with imazing to get the old versions back?

try this it works

Downgrade to old iOS Version - Howto! - no jailbreak required - Plex Players / Mobile Devices - Plex Forum

I’m on Mac and do not have access to a PC. I also do not have a Windows license or a VM/parallels license.

Neither is strictly necessary for running a Windows VM. VMware Fusion is free for personal use. And most editions of Windows 11 can be installed without providing a license key; it can’t however be activated in this state. This imposes some limitations, none of which matter here.

The easiest way to do this would likely be to install VMware Fusion 13.x. After it’s installed, create a new VM and select the option to “Get Windows from Microsoft.” It will then download Windows, ask some configuration questions, and then install it. The most challenging part will likely be finding the download for VMware Fusion (hint: You have to create an account):

Another option would be to use UTM:

There’s a guide in their support area which walks you through the process of installing Windows. It’s not quite as straight-forward as VMware Fusion.

Another free option would be Oracle VirtualBox 7.1.x:

Is there a way you could post the IPA file? The only export option I see is if the app is on my Library on my PC, not on the device which is where I need to pull the IPA file from. Or can you provide additional information on how you exported the App from you iPad to your PC library to then re-load to the iPhone. When I connect my iPad to iMazing and go into Tools - Manage Apps - Device, these are the only options I see. Not seeing an export option here.

You need to connect the device that has the old plex app on it then select the device in imazing and click data then select apps. Find the app and then select the copy to pc check the screenshot i posted
