Restoring server from backup failing

Hi Plex Forums,

First of all would like to just quickly say that I love Plex, i’m still on the fence about buying a lifetime subscription, and sadly this most recent problem has put me off slightly.

Now on to the problem, it’s probably quite common? But I was reinstalling windows 10 on my laptop, did a backup of all of Plex’s data in App Data, and once I had reinstalled on my new system, and spent a huge amount of time unzipping and copying the data in to place, it isn’t taking any of the data i’ve transferred across. The media is getting new metadata, none of the play state is there, it’s just setting everything up from scratch.

Any help would be really appreciated, even to point me in the right direction for reading up on how to fix it.

Thank you!

It is crucial that both servers (old and new) are not running when you copy over the Plex data folder.

Otherwise the main Plex database file may get damaged during the transfer.
In this case copy it again properly or restore one of the backup copies.

Thank you for your reply Otto!
I’ve figured out what the problem was, i feel really stupid.
When unzipping the backup of my old Plex Server the folders were put within folders with the same name, and somehow I didn’t notice. So for example metadata had a folder in it called metadata, then that’s where the actual content was.
Can’t believe I didn’t notice this, I’ve got it all up and running again, it’s working like a dream
