It appears as though the standard is for wide/landscape poster art (though still no official word from developers on this subject). If that is indeed the standard, then the Roku client is now adhering to that standard, but the iOS client has failed in that standard. I have now updated the poster art for several thousand items (to landscape art), so I hope that effort was not in vain.
