I am converting my DVDs using MakeMKV to preserve the original video quality. Using the Windows app or the Android app, these videos use direct play. However, when I use my Roku TV, it transcodes because of “unsupported video stream mpeg2video”. I’ve tested another media server (the OSS one) and it is able to direct play these videos on the same tv. I’ve tried various settings (force direct play, etc.) but no luck.
Is this a known issue with Plex/Roku or is there anything else I can try to get this to work?
Ok… I think I found my problem. That option was disabled when I went to double-check and I discovered that I was changing the setting while watching the movie. Once I found the global settings and enabled it (as well as changing local/remote quality to original), I’ve gotten closer. It’s now using “direct stream” instead of “direct play” but the increase in quality is obvious. Disabling “allow direct stream” went back to transcoding, but I think it gave me a clue as to why (I think only 1 of video/audio was using “copy”).
I’ll probably still try to figure out why it’s not using direct play, but unless you have any other ideas or perhaps that’s what’s expected, I can live with direct streaming.
