Roku client stopped playback?

Server Version#: Version 1.18.7.2438
Player Version#:6.4.10.6174

There was another thread that just closed (missed adding to it). I have had this problem for months now. If I start playing a show, within the first few minutes it drops the buffer and playback stops while it sits there spinning away. looking in the logs it is always the same problem. This is not one show, or an isolated event, constantly, nearly every show, so much that when a show plays fine you’re surprised. I posted in Linux Server and they said not a server issue, and I believe they’re right. I have multiple Roku and each is the same. I have family on other platforms/web player and no issues.

I’m looking for help in resolving this. I have logs I could post, and can always generate fresh logs as it’s a recurring problem…the snippet below is from tonight’s log and mirrors other logs.

@Cafe_Diem, was your issue resolved?

You’re talking about my problem with Roku/DTS and halted playback a while back, right?

As far as I know, this is still a problem in certain cases if you’re using MKV/H264/DTS. My workaround is that I’ve disabled DTS as an HDMI output option on my Roku (it’s in the Roku’s settings, not Plex), limiting it to only AC3 output. PMS will then transcode all DTS to AC3, and the quality is fine for the TV in question. I could also fix all the files by copying the streams in FFMPEG, but I didn’t feel it was worth the trouble at the time.

Hey @ljunkie, just CC’ing you on this, do you know if anything ever came from this thread:

my PLEX is on a VPS with G-Suite. I don’t remux as it takes a ton of time and CPU resources. I’ll have to look into the Roku settings to disable DTS as an HDMI output option, hopefully it helps as a workaround. As the PLEX logs show it’s an issue with the Client and not the server, it should be something that the PLEX team working with ROKU can come up with a patch.

Just checked.

Settings -> Audio -> Audio Mode: Auto
Settings -> Audio -> HDMI: Dolby Digital Plus

Set those two settings, and try it again. If that doesn’t fix it, you may be running into a different issue.

Cheers, will test that out (benefits of working from home)

well, no luck, still happening.

Anyone from @Plex have any ideas. This is still happening. I can start a Movie, and within 3-6 mins of starting, it drops the connection and starts to buffer again. Logs point to the Client being the problem, and if it’s the client, is it the PLEX App, or the Roku device. Either way, something is not right. Roku 3 is hardwired.

Well I am not “from Plex,” thank God. but I do have an idea I have noticed before. I once had a Roku connected wirelessly and it would often stop and buffer so as to make any content unwatchable while Emby on the same box with the same content worked fine. I changed my network around a bit and connected all my Rokus wired and the Plex buffering stopped completely. If you are connecting wirelessly and you have a Roku that can be connected wired you might want to change it to wired as a possible fix.

@Elijah_Baley, thank you, however, yup’…I resolved that issue a few years ago, and these are wired Roku devices. It’s not that the buffer runs out, the client simply disconnects. Note: My server is not local, it is a VPS.

Seeing a similar problem with some specific audio files.

I posted this a while back…

… but nobody cared. :frowning:

I’m not sure if it is the same thing, but in my case (multiple roku devices, some wired, some wifi), they all hang on these files.

The odd thing is that while they are longer than average tracks, I have other tracks that are much longer (full concerts, etc) that have no problem. These do, have extremely long filenames. I have made copies with short names and the problem persists.
