Plex / Roku : Playback abruptly halts

Server Version#: 1.29.1.6316
Player Version#: 7.0.19.8058-54d0393d3

What happens is that I will go play a file in my TV library and it will play for about 5-10 seconds and then it will just return to the menu and act like it’s going to play the next episode, it won’t mark the previous episode as watched or throw any kind of error client side, it will just try to ignore it and just move on. It seems to always stop at the same point per file, but for the files that are affected, how far it gets can vary by a second or two. I first noticed this issue on a few random files about a week ago.

In my testing so far… this seems to be isolated to files with an EAC audio codec, does not affect every file. This also seems to only occur when trying to play these files on a Roku device (I’ve tested with 3 separate devices, all different types). On the plex server, the most notable error is ‘Failed to stream media, client probably disconnected’. Some people blamed their network, but for me this seems to affect wired (gigabit connections) and wifi.

Things I have tried:

  • Server: Deleting all items in Codec folder on Plex Media Server, restart and let them redownload. (No improvement)
  • Server: Changing fs.inotify.max_user_watches (This solved a different error I didn’t know I had, but no improvement on primary issue)
  • Server: Disabling ‘scan my library automatically’ (No improvement)
  • Client: Disabling Transcode / forcing transcode (Forcing transcode seems to have extended the amount of time a file will play, but still dies after a few more seconds)
  • Client: Changing subtitle burn in settings (No improvement on any items)

I found other people with similar issues, but most of them were based on using a docker image (I am not using docker) and the suggestions there didn’t quite apply. My plex media server is running on Ubuntu 20.04.

Error on the Plex Server:

I’m kinda lost, anyone have any suggestions? I did see someone mention that there may be a way to force audio transcoding for specific clients with specific codecs, but coming up empty on details on that one.

After a bit of checking and troubleshooting, still no luck on my end.

I spun up another Plex Server to see if it was unique to my configuration and unfortunately the new server also had what looked to be the same issue. As an addition, I also tried the ‘Plex Preview’ channel which I think may be the same version, but it does also seem to offer no improvement currently.

This error is still present in the new Plex Preview version.

Tested on 7.0.20.8083.
