Roku recommendation

My current setup has the server on a hardwired windows 10 pc. i5 4670k cpu with evga 1060 6gb video card. I want to stream to the bedroom. I currently use a Samsung smart hub plex app on the TV and it’s not a consistent quality. I was going to connect a roku to the TV, but was hoping to get recommendations on which model. Also if I bought a new TV with roku built in what stand alone roku model is it similar to?

Get an Ultra. Also do not get a Roku or other so called “smart” TV unless it is actually cheaper than just a regular TV, they often are. Smart TVs are really just traps that tend to have small failures in the “smart” setup that hurt the overall TV experience. You can always replace an external device while doing similar for the smarts inside a TV is MUCH harder and usually more expensive.

Even though I am having pretty good luck with a Fire 4K Stick I strongly recommend avoiding stick type devices and, whatever you get, try to connect it wired rather than wireless. Wired is always better than wireless for streaming.

Just wanted to note that a Fire TV stick can use wired instead of wireless, if a person desires.

I also prefer wired at all times, but I do want to credit the progress on recent devices. I have a couple Roku Streaming Stick+ on my wifi network, which has a strong 802.11ac signal one wall away. The stick can handle direct-play of not only Blu-Ray but also MPEG2 HD via antenna. So they’ve come a long way.

But in the end, I agree: It’s nice to avoid the complication of wifi whenever possible.

My only option for a “wired” client in the bedroom is to use a powerline adapter.

Also this is what I’m seeing when something is playing

While not as good a being directly wired such an adapter is, in the majority of cases, WAY better that connecting wireless. But as @Cafe_Diem said wireless has become much better than it used to be. Wired is still much better but, if the area is at least mostly interference free, wireless can be acceptable for most streaming.

did you see the image i added? is that normal for the bandwith to look like that?

Pretty much normal. Contrary to what most people think streaming through the network or pretty much any other way is not a steady stream. Rather than that it comes in very short bursts and the playing device smooths it out, usually.

Seconded that it’s pretty normal. I see some variations on the graph that I’ve never bothered to confirm, perhaps different containers, but spikes like that are common.

I also second @Elijah_Baley on the concept of powerline networking. Unless you’re doing 4K UHD stuff (which needs a ton of bandwidth), it would probably be plenty speedy and stable enough for day-to-day Plex streaming.
