After launching the Plex app on my Roku stick, it does not find my local Plex server right away and defaults to the next available. That being a friends shared library. I need to go up to the server choices and click on my local server to force it to look again. Once I do that it finds the server and loads my library. I have recently replaced my wireless router with Google’s OnHub router by ASUS.
To be clear this is not the DNS rebinding issue that others have reported. I’ve set the advanced settings manually to Google’s DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). Access from the outside works just fine.
My gut is telling me that the router does not like Plex’s GDM discovery. One other thing I’ve noticed is when checking the server settings from the PMS gui, I see it takes a second or two to get the checkmark confirming outside access.
PMS is hardwired to OnHub Router. Everything on same subnet.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Some additional troubleshooting has revealed that this is specific to the Roku Streaming stick. I downloaded and connected Plex on my old as the hills PS3 and it found my local server right away. App on my Android phone also connects to my local server. It’s a difficult problem to pinpoint as it worked fine with my previous wireless router. It would be easy to lay the blame on the OnHub router but without knowing how each piece really works, I’m left with no option than to keep on eye on each product forum.
I have a Roku streaming stick and run a D-Link router and do not have the issues you are experiencing. As a point of reference, I am using the newer model of the streaming stick (2016).

Thanks. I think my Roku stick is 1st gen. The problem only came up after upgrading my wireless router to the Google OnHub. Great coverage, basic config options. I’m sure it’s the issue but no way of knowing what it’s doing to cause it. Power saving? Blocking GDM? As I said if i go to the available servers and click on my local server it does find it.
If it’s a purple color, its the first gen model. The new one is all black.
Anyway, I’m not sure if its a GDM issue. If you’re not using secure connections (on your Plex server), just as a test, you should see what happens with the Plex Classic channel on the Roku stick. If it is the first gen model, I don’t believe it’s getting all the new features/functions just due to hardware limitations, so I’m assuming Plex/Roku are handling this with different installs of the apps based on Roku model. They (Plex) has been adding a lot on the back-end with the Roku client lately where it’s trying to account for a server that is local and isn’t signed in. There may have been a new issue introduced with some of that. See some of the updates here: forums.plex.tv/discussion/27134/plex-for-roku#latest
Also, about the time you introduced the new OnHub router, did you do a PMS update? I’m running 1.0.2.2413 which is not the latest release of PMS.
Yep definitely the 1st Gen (purple model). Running 1.1.0.2611 PMS. Secure Connections are set to preferred on the server.
I didn’t realize I could still get the Plex classic channel. Can I get that on the Roku through the usual method?
I’ll review the release notes on that link to see if it explains anything.
Yep, you can still get the classic channel but its a private channel so it doesn’t show up on a normal search on the Roku. Do the following to get it:
- Go to my.roku.com and make sure you are signed in.
- Come back to this forum and click on owner.roku.com/add/plexclassic
- That should take you directly to the page where you can add the Plex Classic channel to your Roku.
Hopefully this helps or can at least help narrow down the issue. Maybe @ljunkie has some ideas since manages the Roku clients.
Awesome. I appreciate the tips. I’ll test these when i get home. (Adding the Plex Roku Preview channel as well). There is a chance I spoke to soon about the DNS rebinding issue as I look over the details of the secure connection options for Plex. I thought it only affected outside connections but it may also be internal DNS as well. I post my test results later this evening.
Well, looks like it is the rebinding issue. After the Roku eventually connects to my server it does not have the green ‘secure’ icon next to it. So now I join everyone else in waiting for Google to update .
