I need to get a streaming client (stick) for wall mounted tv. I want to be able to access Plex movies and TV. I know roku has support or vice verse, but does Amazon Plex app/Firestick support it?
Of those two devices you mention:
Roku wins
FireTV loses
I own both.
I LOVE the Roku UNO app.
I Loathe The FireTV app.
In all the years Iāve owned my FireTV, Plex has NEVER been able to develop an app for it that even comes close to the Plex UNO app for Roku.
Itās not even a contest.
Plex doesnāt have a FireTV Plex app to put in the race.
Roku - has the field a lap down and soon itāll be two.
Thanks, Thatās just what I needed to know and suspected.
Thanks again,
Regards.
meant to ask, the roku/plex app for their stick, you can access your oown library obviously but Plex movies and Tv>
Yes indeed.
If any Online Media Source is enabled - Roku will show them to you.
ty vm.
Agreed, Roku 100%. If you want problems get that amazon thing
My old firestick is in a landfill somewhere, rubbish.
I have a Gen 1 FireTV Box.
I keep in around so I can tell people how much the Plex app sucks on it.
They did add PVTs to the scrub-bar. Very recently. Not bad, actually.
If they ever make a suitable app for it - Iāll know - and give it an honest review.
Roku Wins. in almost every way. I have both as well. I especially love the roku api. itās easy to write scripts for, I mean, adb on firestick is ok and all, but the roku api is just so much easier and quicker.
The Season View is Genius on Roku.
The way the episodes are laid out beneath the active episode - to pick and choose from - is great. Switching Seasons could be better, but if starting at the Show Level - FF/RW on the active episode jumps Seasons⦠so thereās that.
Speaking of FF/RW:
It acts as Page Down/Over - Page Up/Back for long lists and grids.
Love it.
A few bugs here and there, but when found, reported and nagged on for a while - they get fixed. Try that on FireTV (if disappointment is something you enjoy).
Iām going to start ānaggingā about that missing āpopup roll-over infoā bubble that once appeared near page bottom as you cruise around showing: Run Time, Episode Name, Resolution, etc. - I do miss that terribly.
the absolute only reason i use the firestick 4K is for that only, 4K, my roku premiere+ claims to be able to support HDR, but it really doesnāt, so thatās the only downside for me, but thatās only because I donāt own a Roku Ultra or something. other than that Iād use my Roku for everything.
Just saw an Ultra at Amazon for $76.
(theyād probably give ya a Refurb <āI have plenty of Refurbs - not a problem)
At the first opportunity - leap.
Note:
There could be some kind of 4K limitation on those Rokus. I have no earthly idea, but that could be the reason I can almost always find a Refurb.
I would reasearch that aspect heavily - unless youād just like to have a nice, cheap Ultra in the house for some reason.
Neither is perfect but I agree that Roku is the clear winner for Plex. However the Fire devices have advantages as there are some valuable, for me at least, apps that have no Roku app. Channels DVR is one example,
The devices are cheap enough that the choices are not just either or but include the possibility of both. A number of people I know, including @JuiceWSA, have both. I use my Rokus a LOT more than my Fires but there are a number of times that I need my Fire TV to accomplish something the Rokus just cannot do.
+1 roku.
all my old fire devices are in a bag that I use to distribute to my enemies.
Seems to be decent device, strange they donāt market it on this side of the globe (Europe\Germany).
Rokuās equivalent of an app store has some very very stiff requirements and that plays a part. Also Roku makes a lot of money from advertisers that advertise pretty non intrusively in various ways on their various devices and there may be regulations that they do not wish to jump through sufficient hoops to comply with.
Also it is just possible that they will, at some time, expand into areas they do not currently have a presence in. They have been expanding very very slowly into new areas for some time.
There is also the issue they ran into in Mexico where the government blocked all sales and use for a period of time due to claims that Roku was aiding in piracy and various other copyright infringements. They (Roku) may well wish to be sure they do not get hit in that way again.
But I thought that Rokus were available in the EU. I know people in Italy and France that are using them. Rokus can easily be used in almost any place in the world if you can get them. You can have friend buy one in areas where they are sold and ship it to you and activate it as a ārest of the worldā device on the Roku site. Roku has a whole section of their app store called āthe rest of the worldā and there are many apps that you can side load with a code as well. Plex works everywhere in the world on Rokus. I know people running Plex in countries from Australia to Vietnam to Russia.
⦠and, if something awful happened, like if you didnāt have access to 12 thousand Church Channels, Public Domain Movie Channels, and all the other noise - you are very fortunate.
I have 10 channels deployed on my Roku and 3 of those are Plex Apps.
My ā100 Channels of ā ā ā ā on the TV to Choose Fromā - is actually only 7.
Well I have 24 apps (I refuse to call them āchannelsā because they are apps) and I have no religious or other junk.
I have two each of my local streaming apps Plex and Emby because I keep the beta and the release app of each. I have two dedicated sports apps NHL and ESPN because I enjoy Hockey and Soccer and you need both to get most of the matches available. I also have Hulu again for FS1 and FS2 and NBCsn for soccer primarily.
On top of those I have a few TV anywhere apps like Fox Sports because the apps sometimes have events that are not broadcast live. And I have You Tube for the few matches that are streamed there and not elsewhere like the recent U20 CONCACAF Womenās World Cup qualifying tournament in The Dominican Republic.
The closest thing to ājunkā I have are a couple of mindless games that I sometimes play to relax my mind before sleep.
While there are a lot of real loser apps on the Roku there are also a lot of quite valuable content.
I have a number of streaming devices all of which have at least one unique function but the Roku is the one I use 95% of the time. It is VERY valuable and it is perfectly possible to ignore the junk apps that are available but in no way forced on you.
It seems as you can get them here at a very limited number of retailers (Amazon), but they are not very popular. Roku also only has a localised homepage for France and the UK here in Europe, so no love for Germany (yet).
As soon as Germans/Others start putting a Plex App on them - they will be.
Mine stays in Plex 98% of the time and, in whatever language the home page is in, if you can read āCheck For Updateā - thatās all you needā¦
(your English is better than my āAnything Elseā, but I could probably do it)
