I have an Apple Extreme (new version) but its not doing the trick. Range is poor and the throughput drops off dramatically based on range. I live in a 1600 sq ft condo so we are not talking across the street. Any recos for a killer router based on plex maximization? I saw the nighthawk but 80% of what I do is DNLA so not being able to enable it in the router based server doesn’t seem worthwhile to me. Any ideas?
I’d recommend the TPLink AC3150. It covers our 2000 sq ft house quite well and has DNLA capability. It’s also much cheaper than other routers in its class.
If you really want inside info on routers, I’d check out the router ranker at SmallNetBuilder. Their router coverage (pun intended) is ridiculously thorough.
thanks much. ranking site was perfect info.
I would recommend the ‘D-Link AC3200 Ultra Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router (DIR-890L/R)’ for a good video streaming router with multiple TV’s (6 Roku w/Plex) and Winders Tablets within the house.
It’s not inexpensive though and I cannot speak to its longevity.

ASUS RT-AC68U. You can run third-party firmware on these and are killer routers.
Currently have an ASUS RT-AC88U and absolutely love it. Ironically, I bought it for the extra ports (it has 9) as I prefer a wired connection, but the wifi performance has been great too. I live in a large 2-story house and I get coverage even in the street (the router is located in the back, upper floor… so can’t get much further)
With that said, my parent’s place seems to suck up wifi signal. (Their home layout is the opposite of mine with the router being opposite the living room on separate floors.) Even with a good router there wasn’t a way to get a signal strong enough to stream the highest bitrate on Netflix (let alone content from MY server) from their living room. In this situation I had them get a powerline adapter. Problem solved.
I still love my Netgear R7000 and am very impressed in how strong the single is and how far it goes. I particularly love the built-in VPN. If I were buying today I’d probably get the R8500.
For wireless coverage, I’m very happy with my Asus RT-AC3100. I don’t use it as a router anymore, but it seemed more than adequate in that respect. I use pfSense as my router now and I couldn’t be happier.
