I have a NAS running PMS and a samsung smart tv. I like the samsung plex app since it can direct play, even with external subtitles on. That way I can enjoy 1080p content. Is that also possible with the Rasplex or does it always have to transcode the video when using external subtitles? Can't find any confirmation about that subject

Direct Play with subtitles works fine on Rasplex I have a lot of movies with 'forced english subs' (only foreign/alien dialogue) in external SRT files. You also need to make sure you check the right boxes in PMS Web server settings and they play by default.

Hello. I have an rpi 2 with rasplex. I bought today the mpeg2 and vc1 codecs. Iāve tryied to play a .wmv video in vc1 codec but when it starts a pop up says that trancoder is starting ( like before I get the codec license) and then fails with a message that cannot find the file. I have latest version of pms. What can I do?
Thanks
Buying the CODECs does not in itself affect the transcoding decision in any way.Hello. I have an rpi 2 with rasplex. I bought today the mpeg2 and vc1 codecs. That happens only after you have edited "config.txt" in the SD card's FAT32 partition, to add the purchased license codes into it.
This can be done with RasPlex running, using SSH methods to access the file via network and using the 'nano' editor of OpenELEC Linux.
But I prefer shutting the RPi2 down and moving the SD card to my PC, where I can edit "config.txt" using a normal text editor.
The error message stating that the file can't be found is surprising to me, as it indicates some other error than just a missing license.
But in your place I would try it again, after making sure that the license codes are included in the "config.txt" file.
Best regards: dlanor
Thank you for reply. Offcourse I did edit the config file, I didnāt mention it because I thought it was obvious! The error I get it before and after I apply the licence in config file. Using PHT in OSX I donāt get the transcoding error, so I believe that my setup and files are ok. It has to do with Rasplex.
Thanks

can you play DTS HD from the TV or RP2 ?? case i have a samsung smart tv it supports DD and as for DTS (dts neo 2.5) not Real DTS or DTS HD
i have some movies in DTS HD that i whant to stream but still dont know how to do that becase i only get DTS
BUMP
I have transcoding disabled in the Plex server and everything plays back beautifully in 0.5.1 - some content freezes in 0.6.0 but I doubt that's an issue with transcoding not being enabled but a bug in 0.6.0 and will simply stick with 0.5.1 for now.

Raspberry Pi does not support DTSHD, search the forum.

If you upgraded, did you enable FFMPEG AVIO? There are no bugs that would produce this result in 0.6.0 unless the file has non supported codecs but you haven't provided any detail about the file that is not playing.

"Use FFMPEG AVIO for Network transport" was definitely the culprit... it's enabled by default in 0.6.0 - I wasn't using it in 0.5.1 - Once I turned it off life got good. Most everything was sporadically stuttering and freezing with it enabled now everything plays well with it turned off. I'm not sure what it's supposed to do but at this point it's moot... 0.6.0 is running well now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Now if I could just get my remotes to work life would be even better :)
I'm sorry if this question has been asked and answered before.Ā When I record OTA HD TV in the UK, it comes in a horrible wtv container, but of course it's a good old h264 video stream inside.Ā I can re-mux that to a mp4 container, but still I have problems direct playing the file on my Roku 3.Ā After some research, I've discovered (I hope) the limiting factor and that is Roku will only direct play a single video stream, whereas the re-muxed mp4 file is flagged up by Mediainfo as being a component stream (which I take to mean it's 3 individual streams rather than a single PAL stream).
I know that's a long-winded introduction, but what I want to know (before going out and buying a Raspberry Pi) is will the RP and Rasplex direct play my component files.Ā I'm sorry if that's a difficult question, but if anyone can answer, that would be great.
In answer to my own question (and in the hope it will be of assistance to someone else)Ā - I took a chance on a RPi2 and installed Rasplex 6 - and yes, it does direct play a component AVC (h.264) stream.Ā This is important to me, because my Roku 3 will not direct play files with a component stream.
I hope that this is the right thread for this question but it regarding DTS transcoding. I have the Plex Android client running on an old google tv that doesn't support DTS. The DTS track is transcoded by PMS to AC3 which plays great.
Now I'm also have RasPlex setup and run into the problem that my TV (like many others)Ā doesn't pass DTS via HDMI. So I figured that it would be great if RasPlex requested to transcode DTS to AC3. But so far I havent figured out how to make this work.
I inspected the PMS log to see what happens when the Google TV sends a request. This is the relevant part from the log:
May 21, 2015 14:06:47 [0x6f7ff410] DEBUG - Request: [192.168.1.5:33968] GET /video/:/transcode/universal/start.m3u8?protocol=hls&videoResolution=1920x1080&directStream=1&maxVideoBitrate=200000&subtitleSize=100&videoQuality=100&fastSeek=1&session=21001c6f6577cad5-com-plexapp-android&path=%2Flibrary%2Fmetadata%2F4&audioBoost=100&directPlay=0&X-Plex-Platform-Version=3.2&X-Plex-Account=84555&X-Plex-Client-Profile-Extra=add-transcode-target-audio-codec(type%3DvideoProfile%26context%3Dstreaming%26protocol%3Dhls%26audioCodec%3Dac3)%2Badd-transcode-target-audio-codec(type%3DvideoProfile%26context%3Dstreaming%26protocol%3Dhls%26audioCodec%3Deac3)&X-Plex-Product=Plex%20for%20Android&X-Plex-Version=4.2.1.354&X-Plex-Platform=Android&X-Plex-Device=Revue&X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (3 live) May 21, 2015 14:06:47 [0x6f7ff410] DEBUG - Using augmented profile Android May 21, 2015 14:06:47 [0x6f7ff410] DEBUG - MDE: analyzing video part 4: mkv/h264/dca/ May 21, 2015 14:06:47 [0x6f7ff410] DEBUG - MDE: selected video transcode profile: hls - mpegts/h264/ac3/ May 21, 2015 14:06:47 [0x6f7ff410] DEBUG - [Universal] Remuxing to hls/mpegts/h264/ac3
Google TV sends these additional transcoding parameters in the request to force(?) AC3 transcoding:
add-transcode-target-audio-codec(type=videoProfile&context=streaming&protocol=hls&audioCodec=ac3) add-transcode-target-audio-codec(type=videoProfile&context=streaming&protocol=hls&audioCodec=eac3)
When I inspected the log when RasPlex did a request I couldn't find any trace of transcoding.
I browsed around in the "Plex Home Theater-RaspberryPi.xml" profile on the PMS but couldn't find the right place to add/modify the transcode settings. I'm not even sure that "Plex Home Theater-RaspberryPi.xml" is queried, I couldn't find a trace of that in the logfile
Is it possible to make PMS transcode DTS to AC3 for RasPlex as it does for Google TV? Thanks!
Edit:Ā Just to add I have disabled "DTS capable receiver", enabled "AC3 capable receiver" and set sound channels to 5.1 in the RasPlex. The effect of this is that only the R/L channel of the DTS tracks is passed as PCM to my receiver.

Try this.
Copy the attached file to /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/Resources/Profiles.
Rename your existing Plex Home Theater-RaspberryPi.xml to Plex Home Theater-RaspberryPi.bak (in case this doesn't work)
Rename the file you just copied to Plex Home Theater-RaspberryPi.xml
Restart PMS and Rasplex.
Try playing a file and see if this solves the problem, if it does make sure you keep a copy of the revised file as sometimes this may change on PMS updates.

Thanks a lot I've tried this new profile but it didn't have any effect.
I suspect that it also might have something to do with the fact that I have added hdmi_force_edid_audio=1 to config.txt. This might fool PMS into thinking that RasPlex is able to play DTS and so transcoding doesn't work? Right no I need hdmi_force_edid_audio=1 because otherwise DD doesn't get pass through via HDMI although "DD capable receiver is enable". If I'm correct this should be fixed in the upcoming release??
DTS does gets downmixed to 2 channels when the number of channel is set to 2.0 in RasPlex, DD/DTS capable receiver is disable and there is no hdmi_force_edid_audio=1 in config.txt...
Unfortunately I don't see anything about which profile PMS is using when RasPlex requests a file. When I play something with the Google TV PMS clearly indicates that it's using an "augmented Android profile".

Hi all,
I have similar problems like mastoul with mpeg2-files in mkv containers. After buying the license and editing the config.txt I still get the message 'Unkown video codec'. MPG2 codec is enabled, i checked this via 'vcgencmd codec_enabled MPG2'. With Kodi/Openelec the files work fine. Any suggestions are welcome.
My setup:
PMS 0.9.12.1 (Synology DS213+)
RasPlex 0.6.0 (Raspberry Pi 2)
I've just moved home and I'm currently stuck without a working internet connection. My Plex server is with me, and I am serving content to my Pi (running 0.5.0) via Wi-Fi dongle as I've not had the time to set up a wired network infrastructure throughout the house.
The Pi is a little out of range of the router and as a result is struggling to play some of my higher bitrate content directly. I thought I'd be able to improve this issue by forcing the server to transcode ALL local media on the server at a lower bitrate. However upon lowering the bitrate option in RasPlex settings (and therefore forcing the server to transcode) all the media now refuses to play with the error below:
Error: Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted.
As soon as I enable direct play again, the content plays fine. The Pi is not signed into My Plex account, unsure if this is related. It's worth noting that this exact setup worked flawlessly back in my old home (where I had a working connection).
Is it worth me updating to 0.6.0?
PMS is running 0.9.12.2
Suggest you update to 0.6.0, there were some fixes to FFMPEG AVIO, further fixes to this and transcode is coming in next release.I've just moved home and I'm currently stuck without a working internet connection. You can always roll back if you're not happy. Have you tried using powerline adapters, the latest fast ones are as good as direct cable (Pi only supports 100 Mbit anyway, and that's shared with USB).
Edit : This is the sort of thing I mentioned http://www.saverstore.com/link/23053814/20818074/newsletter/eSaves_Limited-Time-Offer

I'm convinced that PMS is acting up. It's beach balling on OS X during startup for 2-3 minutes, and often tells me there was an error during update and to install manually. This persists despite having downloaded the latest version and installed.
