We built a home server to handle data and our Plex needs. Plex works beautifully for the most part, with the exception of 4K 10bit content. It lags, buffers and sometimes plain out stops when playing. I cannot figure out why. The only TV in the house I really want to watch that content on is the TV in the theater room, so I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.
How are your server and the TV connected to your home network?
While wired connections use to be more reliable, most smart TVs only have a 100 Mbps LAN port… that can be a bottleneck for high-quality 4K content → keep in mind the max. bitrate of a Movie can be significantly above the average bitrate!)
Wireless connections are often subject to all kind s of interferences (ranging from obstacles like walls, furniture or other technical equipment that impacts the signal to actual interferences from neighboring WLANs)
The Ryzen 5 3600 has a PassMark score just above 17000… that should be sufficient to transcode your average 4K HDR media… but it’s kind of at the threshold and might not work for all movies… in particular if you want it to add the tone mapping or some heavy audio transcoding
Thanks for the request for additional information.
The network is a 1Gb connection, with wireless throughout providing 600-800Mb in most rooms. The Display we are watching on is a Samsung Q80A, running off of Wireless. The theater room has fantastic WiFi connection, and we have no problems streaming any content of any kind, only Plex high bitrate content.
What’s your reference for “any content of any kind”? Most other streaming content is highly optimized for streaming and will have a much much lower bitrate than high-quality 4K media – even if it’s marketed as such. Or are you talking about streaming the same file through a different app or DLNA client?
Plex HTPC use an inferior method for hw decoding, so Plex HTPC is for the most part useless for 4k content (at least for me). Plex Media Player (PMP) direct plays everything smoothly, so I would recommend you to try that (even though it’s old), until they fix Plex HTPC.
