The use case is to bring it into my barbecue place in the garden, where it mainly serves as a music player, controlled per Plex Companion.
From time to time I will connect a video projector to watch a movie on a summer night.
So there will be no IR remote control and no screen most of the time.
I am aware of the RemotePi by MSL.
But this is far too much functionality, which I don’t need. It’d bring the overall costs of this tiny music player to over 100€.
So I’m looking for a simple button (plus maybe a resistor) solution to safely shut down the Pi. Plus the accompanying script(s).
Nothing else. No ‘Power On’, no remote control or anything else fancy.
After the safe shutdown, the PSU will simply be pulled out of the wall socket.
Pretty similar to the RemotePi (but no IR) but cheaper. I have not purchased one but ran across this as I was looking to use a Raspberry Pi as a PMS for my car.
Thank you, I appreciate the information!
But to me this looks still too complex. If I add shipping and tax to the price, I may end up with the same amount as for the RemotePi.
I totally understand. I ran across this one as well. Its a bit more “hacky” and involves a bit of effort but it’s very “simple”. Other useful info in some of the comments people posted on this mod.

Why not just use an app on your phone that will send the poweroff command through SSH to the PI?
Excellent suggestion!
Although, if there are several (not technically inclined) people around, this may not work. This particular device will end up on a ‘ranch’ with constantly changing people around.
Not everyone has a smartphone handy, with WiFi enabled. (Or can be arsed to pull it out of the pocket). So there is still a big chance of someone just yanking the power cord if there is no visible ‘Power Off’ button.
I appreciate the info, but this feels even more fancy than the Remote Pi.
Plus it won’t work without a pretty strong WiFi signal (this tiny button doesn’t look like it has room for a good WiFi antenna) which cannot be guaranteed at this location.

I understand the issues with WIFI, I just like re-purposing products like this for other uses
