Hi, is not a problem but is something i do not know if is a bug or not.
I have a samsung js9000, when i chose truehd 7.1 the plex app let me use directplay, but on my nvidia shield always need to transcode with truehd.
Does my tv support it or is bad information on the plex app?

According to the Samsung web site, the TV supports Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, AAC, and dts.

This is the first TV I’ve heard of that will direct play TrueHD audio. All others force an audio transcode on the Plex server.

To what is the Shield connected - TV, receiver, etc?

The device to which the Shield is connected tells the Shield what audio formats it supports (via a HDMI handshake). The Shield will passthrough supported formats. Unsupported formats will be transcoded by the Plex server or possibly decoded on the Shield.

So, it seems the device to which the Shield is attached tells the Shield it does not support TrueHD. Therefore, the audio is transcoded by Plex Media Server to a supported format.

If you really want to get into the details, you can post log files from your Plex server and clients.

For the TV app, there should be a setting for “Log to Media Server” in the app settings.

For the Shield, enable logging in the Plex app settings. Note the URL displayed in the lower right corner when logging is enabled (http://ip_of_shield:32500/logging).

For your Plex Server:.

  • Set your system for debug, not verbose, logs. Plex Web -> Settings -> General -> Show Advanced.
  • Play a movie with TrueHD audio for 30 - 60 seconds using the Plex TV app. Make sure subtitles are turned off.
  • Play the same movie using the Shield, 30 - 60 seconds, no subtitles.
  • Wait about two minutes for the server to settle.
  • Using Plex Web, go to Manage -> Troubleshooting. Download the log files. Post zip file to this thread.

To pull the logs from the Shield, the Plex app must be open (no need to play anything). Go to the URL mentioned above. Save the output as a text file and attach to the thread.

Im not at home right now. But im gonna try that and ill share the log. The shield is directly on the tv. Wierd thing is the Samsung plex app when i select truehd let me choose direct play.
