Server Version#: 1.20.4.3517 (Synology DS416play)
Player Version#: 8.9.0.21537 (Nvidia Shield TV 2019)
Audio System : AVR-X1600H (with eARC and full support of Dolby TrueHD / Atmos)
The Shield is directly connected to the audio system.
If I play a TrueHD 7.1 movie, Plex will transcode the movie and I have lags. I I read the same movie with MX Player or VLC, there is no transcode (direct streaming).
I tested with Kodi + Plex add-on and it works like a charm with TrueHD 7.1 with Pass-through enabled.
So, I think TrueHD 7.1 support for Plex Player on Android TV is missing…
Check the audio settings on the Shield: Device Preferences -> Display & Sound -> Advanced sound settings -> Available Formats = Auto.
Note: Do not change from Auto. Enabling / disabling specific audio codecs results in all audio transcoding.
Check settings in the Plex app on the Shield:
Video Quality
Adjust automatically = OFF
Home Streaming = Maximum
Remote Streaming = Maximum (if Shield is remote to Plex server)
Advanced
Passthrough = HDMI
Network Logging = On
Enable New Player = On
Play a movie with TrueHD audio with subtitles off.
Is the video and/or audio transcoding?
If still transcoding:
Let the movie play for ~30 seconds.
Stop playback. Wait 1 minute for logs to catch everything.
Pull Plex Media Server logs.
Pull Plex app logs from Shield. See Android, Android TV, Fire TV Logs. Note 1: Leave Plex app running, otherwise you cannot access the logs. Note 2: Use http, not https, to connect to the Shield to pull logs (http://<shield_ip_address>:32500/logging).
Issue is still present with the latest versions of player and server…
Why Kodi+Plex allow direct stream and not the native player?
It’s very strange…
It seems to be an issue with Dolby formats (and an old issue of what I can read in this forum…)
With DTS (DTS, DTS-HDMA…) no issue, Plex play with direct stream.
