'Scanning library files' causes roku and web player to be unable to start new content

Server Version#: 1.41.0.8992-8463ad060
Posted a question the other day but was wrong about the symptoms.

At this point I’ve found that if I “Scan Library Files” for either TV or Movies (from my PC or the web client) I then can not start ANY content on the Roku or web client for at least 15 minutes after the scan.

I previously assumed it was something to do with the scanning for intros and credits, but I switched that off (set to schedule only) and it still has the problem. In fact it still has the problem even if it doesn’t find any new content. Just scanning breaks it.

The moment I hit scan library files, I’ve effectively thrown a switch that says ‘roku / web can’t start new content’ for 15 minutes.

If something is already playing on the roku or web client, it continues to play without issue, but if it finishes and tries to start the next episode etc BEFORE that 15-20 minutes is up, it won’t load.

If you try to start a new movie or show during that period, it fist shows just the ‘wait wheel’ and after about 20 seconds it goes to 13%, but then stays there until it reports that it couldn’t load and offers to cancel retry or go on to the next episode.

The web client does the wheel and then reports “Error code: s1003 (Network)”

If I check the plex server during that period there is no unusual CPU SSD or Network activity, and no indication of why it is failing. If I start something on the PC client it works fine.

I saw something specific to the s1003 error and tried enabling ‘Use hardware-accelerated video encoding’ but that had no effect on the issue.

Any ideas or suggestions what to check or what to try to resolve?

Thanks!

I had an issue before that Plex would completely stop transcoding while a full library scan was in progress, but it was only while the scan was in progress.

Is this a new problem? Because there is a new bug out where videos would go missing from a library after a scan and then return on the next library scan. Is your scan interval set to 15 minutes, perhaps?

Thanks for your response
No, it appears to be an old problem.

It seems clear now that it originally appeared (and was the most unavoidable) when we were using the Plex DVR. We had to stop using it because it would record, then roku would stop working. We then assumed it was related to recording or something and stopped using the DVR at that point.

Then I realized it still happened while the library was scanning for intros and credits, and assumed it was that that was preventing proper play, so at another users suggestion I set that to only scan on schedule.

After that I realized it just does it after scanning for new content.
