Search function doesn't respond at all if 1 letter word is in the search entry

Server Version#: 1.32.4.7195
Player Version#: 4.108.0

Having an issue where if I enter the name of a movie or show that contains the letter “a” alone by itself as part of the name in the search, then the search function doesn’t find any results. But as soon as I remove the letter a, it finds what I am searching for.

This only happens when the single letter “a” is entered alone anywhere in the search field. If I enter a title with a the letter “i” at the start, the search results are correct. So it seems to be something only occurring with the single letter a being entered.

examples:
A Walk in the Wood. > No results found
Walk in the Woods > finds “A Walk In the Woods”
A Bug’s Life > No results found
Bug’s Life > finds “A Bug’s Life”
Baby in a Manger > No results found
Baby in Manger > finds “Baby in a Manger”

See below screen shots.

Is this indicative of something wrong within my database indexing? Or something within the search functions of the server? Is anyone else seeing this type of issue? I believe this started happening just after the last update.

It occurs on the web client, Android mobile client, and on the Roku client.

Thanks,

Does optimizing your database help? That should rebuild search indexes. Anecdotally, I’m not seeing this on PMS 1.32.5.7210, web 4.108.0:

I ran a database optimization on both databases to see if it would help with the issue and still had the same results. I have 2 servers on 2 separate physical systems, hence the +3 showing for A Bug’s Life for the 1080p version on the first server and then the 4K and 1080p version on the second server.

However, I find it difficult to believe that both fully independent databases on separate physical systems would experience the same type of obscure issue at the same time.

Does the same thing happen with the or an?

Have you by any chance changed the hidden ArticleStrings setting?

Works fine with “The” and “An”

I’m not even sure where or how I would change the hidden articlestrings setting, but will check it.

No registry entry for ArticleStrings.

How about a single-letter search for I?

Works fine for the letter “I”

I shut down Plex and rebuilt my DB and Blobs DB using the batch file repair utility.

I then reloaded Plex and it was stuck at around 90% CPU for a good 5 to 10 minutes and then settled to it’s normal > 1% CPU. However, I am still seeing the same issue with the letter “a” for searches. New example below:

I’m running out of ideas on what to try…

Another weird result that I can’t figure out.

As referenced previously, I rebuilt the database and blobs database the other day for Server 1. Everything appears to be working normally with the exception of the search functionality. And now it’s gotten even weirder.

Searching for “War for the Planet of the Apes” only finds the move on Server 2 and not Server 1 (I rebuilt the DB’s on Server 1). However, if I remove only ONE of the words “the” from the search field and now search for “War for Planet of the Apes”, it now results in finding the movie on both servers as it should. How can removing one word The and leaving the other in be a factor!?

See below:

Finds the 1080p version and 4K version on Server 2.

Finds the 1080p version and 4K version on both Server 1 and Server 2…

What the frack!?!? The word “the” is still in the search field, but if you add the second one where it should be within the title, it suddenly refuses to match on server 1 on which the DB was just rebuilt? I tried re-matching both the 108Op and 4K versions on Server 1 and ran analyze on both and still the same results.

This has to be the weirdest issue I have ever found.

No further responses?

The issue is still ongoing and I can’t find a reason nor figure out what to try next to correct it.

Found that, alongside “a” also “the” and “I” in the search box breaks functionality (ie. “Tales from the Crypt” won’t be found, but “Tales from Crypt”, “Tales Crypt” both work fine). Also for Dr. Strangelove (removing “the” and “I” would work in any word combination of “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb”; special characters are also fine).

I think that the issue might be with the clients, not the server. The iOS app works fine with any typed word however Android app throws the “no results were found” message. Strangely enough, Plex Dash app on Android finds all searched items. On Windows neither browser or app works with such words.
