Secured vs encrypted. Does does what exactly?

Hello,

I just did read the article : https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/206225077-How-to-Use-Secure-Server-Connections
In this article, the word “encryption” is** only used once** used at the top of the article : “When browsing the internet or making other connections these days, everyone wants to make sure that the communication taking place is secure and encrypted.”

I have questions/remarks :

  • It is not because plex is “secured” that the connection between a server and a client is “encrypted”. So what is actually doing plex? Is it only checking that the client is connecting to the right server? and then…
  • Is ALL the content itself sent to the server always encrypted?
  • Is the encryption for all devices (plexApp, plexWeb…)

Thanks for your help

When “Secure Connections” are active, the connection between Plex Server and Plex clients is secured by encryption (‘TLS’ to be precise).

The content is not sent to the server. The server sends content to the clients.

There are some older clients, which don’t support Secure Connections.
If you set the preference to “Required”, these clients won’t be able to connect to the server anymore.

OttoKerner, thanks a lot for your prompt help.
I would suggest that the article would specify that…
have a great day
