David, I saw the Floss episode. Just got the Ouya. Not a gamer at all. Got it for Plex only. The Android is disappointing. Some files play audio out sync. The fanart presentation is kinda dumb. Might work for a phone but not a TV.
Based on the Podcast I side loaded developer 1.2 and MX Player. Auto discovery didn’t work. Entered IP manually. Crashed a lot but worked enough to test some files. The ones that were out of sync in the Plex Android app played in Serenity just fine. FF & RW just flies. The Roku struggles with that and lately been using Rasplex but FF is non existent.
One cool thing, I have a Flirc mapped to an Apple TV remote and a WIFI keyboard. Pretty much, all the expected remote/keyboard functions work as expected in Plex. In the Plex Android app this isn’t the case. You’re pretty much tied to the controller.
Some questions:
- Since I’m not a gamer would performance in a Co-star be just as good as the Ouya?
- Do you plan to add photo viewing?
- I have a lot of sections, scrolling horizontally is tough. Could you add an option to go vertical?
- Fanart in grid view is not as prominent as I would like. Are you open to suggestions possibly tweak grid view?
Since you aren’t a gamer then yes a Co-star you work well. Even better if you can swing the extra cash is the Sony gs8 or gs7.the sony has built in dolby digital decoding which the costar doesn’t. So you’ll have a better experience with it.
If you could please open bug reports for the ouya. I’m working on addressing sone known issues. I’ve reported some issues back the developer of mx player about it and the ouya so hopefully those get addressed on that end.
Btw always open to suggestions. Best place to do that is on the GitHub issue tracker for the project. Photo viewing is planned but may not be for a while. If somebody wants to help implement it it’ll get done sooner rather than later.
Btw on the Google tv you can use the channel up and down buttons on the remote to scroll a page at a time in the grid view. See the keyboard shortcuts in the faq for the project.

Okay, make sure you have AAC or MP3 audio for the co-star otherwise, you have to use the HDMI pass thru for the audio since Serenity doesn't support the transcoding functionality. Otherwise you should be fine I developed Serenity on the Co-Star for about 3 to 4 months and used it as my daily driver for Plex before I bought the Sony GS7 device.
