Serenity for Android v2.0.0-M5

Just a heads up, that v2.0.0-M5 will be coming probably this weekend.

A lot under the covers have changed, but going forward Serenity for Android will be focused only on TV support, and will only work on Android 5.0 or higher devices. Lots of reasons for this, but mainly my own limited time (if you couldn’t tell from the lack of updates and releases).

Serenity also now in addition to Plex, supports using an Emby Server to access your information. Emby has a few more options available due to the API being publicly documented, but if you have an unsecured non Plex Connect server, you should be able to still use Serenity going forward.

Just some things that have changed.

  1. Better TV Browsing and focus on your content.
  2. Better integration with Android TV Leanback library
  3. Fix issue with Search results not displaying.
  4. Fixed many focus and navigation issues.
  5. Transcoding is supported for the internal player so no longer need to use an external player unless you want.
  6. Server Selection and Refresh screen. If you have more than one Server in your house, you can now pick and choose which one Serenity Connects too.

What’s missing:

  1. Toggle context menus (long press) is missing.
  2. Toggling Watched/Unwatched status
  3. Subtitles are not available

Might be done in the future:

  1. Multi-User Support
  2. HTTPs

I’m still running an old version of Plex on a machine that probably hasn’t been updated in a long time, so some things may break. I’ll try to address those as we go forward. Keep an eye on this topic for public Beta releases.
