Server buying guide

Hi all,

I have spent some time researching about Plex and it looks incredible. I currently have a NAS with Kodi clients, and Tivo boxes around the house but I want to remove all of this and create a Plex server instead. I am looking for some advice on what to buy and what to install. And if anyone knows of some good step by step instructions, that would be amazing too.

My thinking is to purchase a PC with an i7 (cpu benchmark around 7,500 to 10,000 range as I will want to have 3 to 5 streams available around the house and external. I would aim for 16gigs of RAM, with the OS installed on a SSD, and my media stored on 2 x 1Tb HDD.
I want to cut the cord with Virgin Tivo and already have a satellite so want to put a tv tuner dvb-s2 card into the server. I know that plex doesnt directly support dvb-s2 yet, so plan to install tvheadend and tvhproxy. I also have an IPTV subscription to get some foreign channels, and will pass this through tvheadend too. Then naturally install Plex to bring all my media and the tvheadend streams into one easy to use interface.
I currently have a usenet server (sabnzbd, couchpotato, sickrage) and would like to put this all on this new plex server too. So my questions are:

  1. What OS should I install (I am most familiar with windows, but okay with linux terminal too and what this to be a headless server). I am unsure if tvheadend and tvhproxy are compatible with windows and dont want to mess around with VMs as I have never done so before.
  2. What dvb-s2 card would you recommend. I have looked at tbs quad tuners but they are expensive. Anything decent that are cheaper.
  3. For the usenet part, do you suggest something other than sabnzbd, couchpotato and sickrage
  4. Is 16gig of RAM enough
  5. Can I use the rasp pis I currently have as clients or will i need to purchase something new (I have two Tvs neither of which are smart)
  6. Would this setup be likely to crash alot due to complexity with tvheadend etc?

My budget for this build including Plex Pass, Tv card purchase and pc will be around the £400 to £500 mark. I already have SSD and HDD. I would be graeful if you keep this in mind when suggesting purchase.

Thanks in advance to all the contribute. Really looking forward to getting this project off the ground.
