I’m experiencing an issue with my Plex Server crashing when I’m playing DVR recordings on my iPhone and seeking throughout the videos. I can play the video straight through but the crashes happen when I try to either use the 30 second FF button or the scroll bar to go to a later part of the recording, such as past commercials.
In rare cases, the video will start playing, after a delay, at the expected place. Most of the time, I get a spinning orange circle and have to close the video. Then maybe 25% of the time I find out that PMS has crashed and I manually need to reboot my computer.
Playback and seeking seems to be fine when viewing recordings on Plex app on Apple TV, just having issues mainly with my iPhone.
I have tried with recordings both where the PMS transcodes or not, and I have no post processing in my workflow.
I realize the DVR & Live TV functions are in beta but is there something I’m missing that’s causing PMS to crash so often?
My setup is:
Intel NUC i5 running Ubuntu Server
PMS 1.7.6.4058 (latest version that I’m aware of)
Plex on iPhone 4.15 (latest version that’s in App Store)
HDHomeRun Prime
I’m having something similar happening . . . I’m also running 1.76 and my issue occurs when I try and cast from my iPhone to my Ultra Chromecast on my Sony Bravia TV.
I get the spinning and then Plex appears to crash and it appears that my network connection on that laptop drops. I’m not able to hit any internet sites and Plex won’t respond - I usually try and go into settings and an error message. I’m running post processing which is converting the ts to a hevc format for compression purposes. So I’m not sure if it’s cause the processor is already maxed out and it’s erroring there or if there is just something else going on.
As my DVR setup is still fairly new and I’m going on vacation at the end of the week I really don’t have time to pinpoint it but I know my routine and I think I’ve figured out how the issue happens at least.
I make breakfast in the mornings and watch the first 30 mins of a show on an iPad Pro - no issues
I then move into my TV room and attempt to cast the rest of the show and it fails causing me to reboot the laptop to regain net and plex availability.
I’m then able to stream the rest of the day with no issue - even with post processing running again
it’s a real puzzle trying to see that pattern of what is happening.
So for the next few days I’m just going to watch other stuff waiting for mce to finish processing before I try and cast something from my phone as I need to gain some confidence in that the system will run while I am away on vacation.

Thanks for the reply and I will do that later today once some post processing finishes up - I don’t know if this is related to Plex or it’s an issue of Plex and MCE(Handbrake converting to HEVC) overload . . but I’m also pretty sure this just came around with recent releases as I didn’t have this specific issue in the past - tho I did just add in the post processing within the past week or so.
I saw on different threads that there were issues caused by moving to MPEGTS in 1.7.6, so I rolled back to 1.7.5 and things seem to be perfectly fine with jumping around DVR recordings with minimal delay and no PMS crashing. I’ll stay on this release until things get better with DVR functionality.
So it took a little longer for it to happen this morning . . . and at first I didn’t think it was going too.
I decided to cast to the TV before doing it directly to the iPad Pro and it worked with no issues from the iPhone to the Chromecast. So I then watched about 30 mins on the iPad and then tried the TV again and it worked. I then stopped casting for about 30 minutes and then came back to start casting again and boom! Another thing I noticed is that the iPhone app doesn’t seem to remember that I was in the middle of a show and shows that it is going to start again at 00:00 and that’s when it crashes.
The casting failed, the 2 recordings that I had going stopped and no outside network access for the laptop - it still had internal network as I was streamed into using the Windows 10 remote desktop app.
Before rebooting I manually grabbed the logs - everything dated today. This was after a restart last night like the directions you supplied asked for but I was unable to reproduce it last night.
No worries. If you can help get 1.7.6 to work, then I’ll move back onto that release but in the meantime 1.7.5 is working great since it records in MKV format.
Just happened again . . . mce running a bunch of post processing and I have only been casting from my phone to my tv.
Looks like I need to update my iPhone to 10.3.3 from 10.3.2 . . . but I doubt that’s the issue
Have been looking at the logs and I presume the problem you are referring to in this set of logs was the one at 14:35 26th July streaming this episode h:\TV Shows\The Steve Wilkos Show (2007)\Season 10\The Steve Wilkos Show (2007) - S10E156 - Javon and Taylor The Entire Story.mkv to chromecast on local IP Address 92.168.1.110 ?
It looks like some networking/system problem arose ar at around 14:33:08 resulting in timeouts for external requests to plex.tv as well as internal communications between the Plex Media Server process and the python agent processes and also the Plex Transcoder process.
Was there no PMS Plugin Logs folder ? The zip you provided did not include those logs and they would have helped me get a better view of the scale of the problem at that time
Could you check the Windows Event Logs through Event Viewer to see what was being logged around that time - 14:33 to 14:36 - 26th July. check the Application event log and the System event log to see if there were any issues around then with the windows environment / disks / network
And once you get that and zip of all the logs, (including PMS Plugin Logs), try and get a process dump of the Plex Media Server.exe process as well
Download https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer
And unzip and have Process Explorer available to run when you need to dump the process
So launch Process Explorer as administrator (right click on exe and run as administrator)
Locate the Plex Media Server.exe process and select option to create full dump
Zip the dmp file and upload on dropbox or similar service and send me link by PM
and please upload the zipped logs and /connections output
Thanks for your help - there is a possibility that this is a form of deadlock on some threads in Plex Media Server

I’m on vacation and won’t be back until August 6th so I won’t be able to get you the info until the following week. Sorry for the inconvenience

That is fine - thanks. By then there may be a new Plex Pass version to try !
I’m also going to do a clean install of Win10 Pro - I’ve just about gathered everything and I’ll be doing that this afternoon.
I’m even thinking of completely resetting up Plex again without restoring the Plex directories like I have in the past when moving from server to server.
