Server speed too slow. Is it my ghetto internet?

Hi all. wonder if you can weigh in on this?

im getting the error message on my TV that says the connection from my server is too slow to play the video. It stops, sometimes buffers, restarts and stops.

Here is the set up

Our internet speed in the house is slower ( ugh… 20 Mbps). I moved from the city with 500Mbps to the country with 20 !

The TV is on main floor. Server on the Mac is one floor upbeat only about 20 feet away and not many walls or bulk heads
Google wifi blankets the house.

I downgraded the speed on Plex to 4mbps, but it still drops after about 20 minutes.

Is there a fix? or is it just my crummy internet speed?

If you’re streaming inside your home network, your internet download/upload speeds have no role in this.

WIFI can be susceptible to all kind of interferences – you already mentioned walls (floors), the same goes however as well for furniture/cabling, neighboring WLANs transmitting on similar bands, other devices taking up available bandwidth…

the strange thing is, i tried it with a wifi box i use for work ( where i connected it to the Mac and the Apple TV) same issue.
then tried it with the homes internet… same issue.
in our previous home the distance from the two were further… and worked perfectly. strange…

You are not alone. Whilst it may well be your home network, Plex has problems as well.

My Apple TV hasn’t complained in quite a while, but it has a direct wired connection to the router (as has my server) and has had problems.

Try playing the film/episode in question with MrMC or Infuse as they seem to be able to play when Plex cannot.
