To reserve power server side, let the shield have an option to transcode client side, currently when there’s too many active streams I often use the kodi add on on the shield so I can direct stream my conte. The plex app on shield ofcourse direct streams but it doesn’t do all file types.

ShieldTVs can direct play MOST file types. What codec are you trying to playback?
If anything I would suggest pre-transcoding your files in a codec your clients support… Usually h264 lvl 4.0 or 4.1 is a great choice. Takes a while but then your server will have a much easier job…or wait until hardware accelerated transcoding gets a stable release.
That’s not enough info, please post the whole XML for that file. Mkvs play fine on the Shield.
Heres the XML

i think what you really want it native decode client side, transcoding is just a waste for no reason.

think about what you are asking.
you want to to be able to decode format A, encode it into format B, then decode format B. Step 2 and 3 is completely un-needed.
Basically everything should be direct play to the shield
Profile: high 10
this means the file has 10bit color resolution.
This will trigger transcoding on almost every client.

Should playback on the Shield, though. @atkinsonkieron this file isn’t direct played on your Shield?
I’ll just use kodi plex addon. Not getting anywhere anyway
Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (new player has significantly increased local direct playback capabilities – actual playback can still require transcoding for various combination of streams)
