Shield Pro won't play a 4K HEVC file

Server Version#: 1.18.9.2571
Player Version#: 4.30.1

Hi,

Is there any way to check why my Shield pro won’t play a certain file? It’s starts up, but gets stuck at the yellow spinning circle … On my windows PC it plays just fine…

BR

Sure, client logs would help:

I think I found the issue, when turning on subtitles the transcoders fails. Without subtitles it’s fine. Is there a way to play the file WITH subtitles and no transcoding ?

Normally the Shield can handle several types of subtitles just fine. What type are you using?

Burning yes, are there options to force burning? Because the Shield should be able to handle most subtitles without burning.

Video is: 4K HEVC (Main 10@L5.1@High) HDR10+
Audio: Dolby TrueHD with Dolby Atmos & AC-3
Text Stream: PGS

Normal 1080p files transcode just fine with subtitles, but with this HQ file the Shield seems to be overloaded :expressionless:

But what I don’t understand is why transcoding is needed for displaying a simple subtitle file?

Which audio track are you using and is it transcoding?

On AndroidTV devices, if the audio is transcoding and subtitles are enabled, the video will transcode.

Try using the AC3 audio track.

Nice, that solved it ! I’ve used the AC3 track and everything is playing fine now :star_struck:
Thanks

Yes and my Shield plays 4K just fine … but it’s not always clear when something triggers a transcode. You don’t have control over this process as well.

Everything is connected on a gigabit network with a high performing NAS.
I’ve been using Kodi for years and never had problems direct playing files. Now I’m used to Plex, I prefer this setup, but this transcoding behaviour is annoying as it’s not needed for playing local content.

Does Kodi direct play atmos? The fault is probably that your system doesn’t support atmos, am I right? Kodi can’t make that work either, there you just wouldnt hear any audio.

Don’t take offense, but the fault is yours selecting an audio track that your system doesn’t support.
