4K HEVC 10-bit being (deliberately) played as 720p on my Apple TV 4K Gen 1 with subtitles turned on as well …
Can I just say - you ROCK for tackling this one! Really appreciate you and your team’s efforts, and your communication via this medium is above and beyond
Hey @chris_decker08 is this fix still on track for 1.32.8 ?
You went quiet on us!
And with this, Shield /Plex went back to being the ideal combination for me. Thanks for the effort so far and for creating so much value
Seems like it is, finally, the fix is in beta now:
The problem as usual is… No updates being pushed to the Shield PMS for a while .
It has been released as beta - 1.32.8.7639
See Plex Media Server - #607 by gbooker02
- (Transcoder) Videos HW encoded on the shield would display a black screen on some devices (#14384)
great - thanks
Yep … not seeing that beta yet in my neck of the woods, being Australia.
Hey all, the shield update is coming. We push to the play store at the same time we publish elsewhere, however there is the additional step of google verification which can take up to a week. I just checked our dashboard and its still “In Review”. Once approved the update will be available in the beta channel which can be accessed by following the instruction on the bottom of the page here.
Thanks @chris_decker08, appreciate the update!
So, there’s still some issues with HW encoding for the Shield with 1.32.8.7639. This makes live tv 720p stations work great. Live TV 1080i stations are jittery (i.e. hardly watchable and very obviously a significatt issue) when streamed live for me (using HW transcode). When the recording is finished the resulting DVR file from 1080i stations then plays fine. Also, when I “optimize” a recorded file, the resulting optimized file is jittery (exactly same jittery as when streamed live) as well.
Of note, I haven’t used Plex server in about 2 years on my Shield…long story. Anyways, all the exact same hardware used to work great…but HW encode on the Shield seems to have always been a buggy thing with a lot of regressions and then fixes over the years.
hi. There is another problem with current HW transcoding. If you set the option to always combine subtitles with the video, subtitles will not be displayed. I only use external SRT or built-in SRT, both have problems. In the past, subtitles were added to videos normally. Please check this issue together.
It looks like this may be related to some clients. After more testing seems to work fine with some clients (roku, Android, LG webOS) and not for others (plex web, plex player).
