Just got my first Pi, a RPi 3 and it’s running rasplex very well. But the Pi does get a little hot even when I’m not running any movies on it, so I’m thinking it might need to be shut off when I’m not using it. Or do I?
Also do I have to run a full shutdown or can I just pull the plug if it’s just running the screensaver? I mean what could happen by pulling the plug without shutdown? Could I damage the Pi or would the need for reflashing the sd card be the maximum risk?
I leave my Pi 2 plugged in and running all the time. Do you have a case or something obstructing it getting good airflow?
Shutting it down first is good practice, if you don’t shutdown it increases the possibility of corrupting your SD card.
Ok thanks, I have a case and have a heatsink mounted. It doesn’t run extremely hot but it’s not cool either.
Have you noticed any decrease in performance when having it turned on for long periodes compared to running after restart? I had to restart my qnap hdstation if it had been on for many hours to make it run at it’s best.
You should definitely shut it down before unpowering. Otherwise the file system on the SD card may get corrupted and then you have to re-flash it.

Ran perfect last night, it’s mounted to the back of my tv with a case and heatsinks. Last time it was restarted was probably about 3 weeks ago when we had a power blip.

Perfect! Sounds like it should be able to run constantly without problems. I think I’ll give that a go.
How do you mount it to your tv, by the way?

Yup, me too, it’s mounted right along with my power strip and 4 port switch.

Arh velcro, of course. Thanks

Be careful. Many of the cheap tapes uses on those heatsinks act more as an insulator than a proper heat-transfer compound. You can end up with a hotter CPU than if it were just exposed to the air.
