Hi, I’m just getting started with Plex. I have a huge music library and every album includes the year of release. IE: “1998 Blues On The Bayou” and some are “1998 - Blues On The Bayou” I been reading how plex wants things named just so. My question is do I need to remove the year from the beginning of the albubm name? Does it matter?
Within Plex you can organize your music in 2 ways.
- if your files have embedded metadata and it’s of good quality, you can tell Plex to use the embedded metadata to organize the songs

When organizing based on folder structure / file names, no year is required.

It all depends on what are you talking about.
Do you mean the folder name on hard disk for the album
or
are you talking about the embedded meta tags?
If you mean the folder name, put the year at least in parentheses.
If you mean embedded meta tags, then no, the year doesn’t belong into the album title. There is a separate meta tag for storing the release year.
Thanks. You know, I did read those articles and it should've answered my questions and in fact they did. I guess the problem is I didn't take away from them all I should have. A common error when trying to process too much too soon with a new system.
I'm pretty consistent when it comes to the meta data in my files. Being a musician myself, I suppose it's an occupational hazard thing. I don't know why I was thinking that Plex only read the folder and file structure on music files, but for some reason that's what I was thinking. I just went back and read the above article again on how to make sure it reads the meta data first. I thank you for pointing that out to me. I was referring to the folder name and not the meta data. However, I've not been placing the year in the folder name inside parentheses, but will start to. I know it may not be necessary to have the year in the folder name, but my OCD likes to see the albums listed in chronological order.
