Problem
Nowadays people subscribe to streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Spotify and rely less and less on locally stored media. The catch with this approach is, that I don’t really have an overview of what is available to me to watch or listen to. And also the recommendation system, that is available in PLEX as well as in the streaming services, only considers content from the very service it belongs to.
Solution
Add all content from the streaming services I’m subscribed to, to my media library. Treat it like my local content (i.e. merge it with my local content, don’t create separate libraries or even channels) and offer it alongside. Especially when recommending content to watch to me, also offer that from my streaming services!
I think it would be fully sufficient, for the first step, to just integrate meta-data (e.g. movie names) from the streaming services and allow me to switch over to their apps for playback. There are already many services like watchi.ly and canistream.it, that offer catalogues of Netflix’s and Amazon’s content. Just integrate those.
