okay, this is baffling.
PLEX ALREADY FETCHES THIS METADATA. Its displayed in the media info tab! Every modern video playback client I’ve used fetches AND SHOWS this data. I came close to buying Plex pass, but the fact that what appears to be a basic feature, just displaying a string already stored elsewhere in a another place still isn’t added (plus the fact that every update seems to make the server-client connection more unstable) puts me off. There are so many instances where you could have multiple audio or sub tracks in the same language that serve different purposes
e.g.
- additional commentary audio or subtitle tracks – sometimes there can be multiple.
- dual audio anime - one track only translates signs and songs for use with English audio, one does complete subs for use with Japanese audio
This is such a basic feature that has been requested end upon end for years, and unlike the other missing basic feature (versions/cuts/different releases of movies and tv shows) you can’t work around it with extra manual entries. Not only do I have to manually test each sub or audio track of the same language to find the right one, I also have to remember which one it is AND MANUALLY select it each episode of a TV show, because plex can’t remember settings between episodes and reverts back to the default. This is painful on Chromecast, where I have to get out of autoplay and select the next epsiode and its settings manually every 20minutes!
Meanwhile Plex adds Podcasts…something that no one really needed.

This is very important functionality, it’s very much missed as I add content to my Plex library, and it really is puzzling why Plex hasn’t add this. It’s hard to believe that it would be difficult to implement.
Plex really needs this. Here are couple of potential options and features that might be handy if/when descriptive tracks are implemented.

Plex will have to play the original track as the default audio. I’ve ran into some family members complaining that they get commentary track and didn’t know how to switch. Have Plex automatically avoid any tracks labeled commentary in order to avoid any confusion for the non tech savvy users.

Plex should prompt and ask which tracks should be played before playing. But make it optional feature under languages section of PMS so people who do not care won’t be bothered by the prompt every time.

Wait, this isn’t already available? This is kind of embarassing. People have been asking for this one for over five years now. Paying customers are asking for this.
This isn’t even *hard. You can add some checkmark options to get rid of most of the “edge cases”
Settings -> Player
- “Remove filename from track names”. Catches scenarios where the track names are just the filename spammed in each one. Uses the filename without the extension as an expression and removes instances of it from each track name.
- “Make track names shorter”. If the track names have a ton of identical characters, get the common string, truncate each instance in track names to 8 characters, add an ellipsis, and move on. This’ll catch similar scenarios even if the filename’s been changed or the tracks just have the title spammed onto them.
- “Remove language/codec name from track name”. This gets rid of Dolby Digital/DTS/TrueHD/DTS-MA (you’d have a list) and English/Spanish/Japanese etc. from only audio track names.
That’s it. Beyond that, display track names after your existing extracted language info. I’m trying to be constructive as well as critical; again, this one has been requested for years with zero visible movement from our end.
* Note: Obviously it’s not trivial to add, but these are all procedures with known and established algorithms and it’s been years.

+1. This is one of the top features I would like to see implemented right now. Pretty much all my content has two french tracks (VFF and VFQ, respectively for “french from France” and “french from Quebec”) and every single time I want to watch something on my Shield, I am forced to pick my laptop to check which track is what from the web app.
+1 Very much needed! I have all movies in several languages with multiple MVO, DUB, custom translations, etc. MUCH NEEDED feature to be able to differentiate!! PLEASE!

As someone who both enjoys commentary tracks (and uses subtitles when playing said commentary), and has lots of dual-language Japanese Anime DVDs, this would be a great help.
(Yes, I know it would say English or Japanese on my Anime. I just think it would look more “professional” if it said “English” instead of “English - AAC Stereo.” The commentary part is still very important too.)

So Plex Web today got updated with a feature showing more detailed stream titles. Why are you guys tip toeing around showing the actual titles fields? Surely make this a togglable option and default to disable will be ok.

+1, as all others noted, i have a terrible time picking which of the 5 audio tracks I need. 1 is 5.1 for the home theater, one is stereo for tablets, and the commentary tracks. Would also be nice if the 5.1 mixdown to stereo didn’t reduce the volume by 40% making it hard to hear.

For silent movies they usually have different orchestral tracks but you can never decipher which is which with Plex.
