One of those features where you can’t quite believe it hasn’t been added - you can even see the audio track titles with ‘Get Info’ on the web, so why not show them when choosing audio? +1!
+1 this is needed
Hey, good news for many of you I guess, I don’t know since when but it’s finally there. I created a new server recently and unlike my old one, it does show audio and subtitles tracks names.
Old server:
New one:
And… I don’t like it at all. I might be the only one but this “feature” gives me more trouble than it solves.
Let me explain.
Tons of files in my library are a complete mess when it comes to their tracks titles. So Plex ignoring them and showing me just what langage it’s and whether or not it’s full or forced was doing the job just fine. It was really neat on display and if I really needed more info, “Get info” was there for that purpose.
Now many movies/shows have extra super duper long (bad) audio/subtitle titles, so long that Plex crops them out of display when I use a Plex client. Sometimes, I can’t even see what langage is selected because of this. (ironic, instead of giving me more information, it does the complete opposite now)
Don’t get me wrong. I am glad for those who really wanted this feature. But can we have the choice here ? Please tell me there is a way to let us decide if whether or not we want to show tracks names. It’s my personal taste but I think the former display was by far way better than this new one.
This is not what was asked.
We want the descriptions to be display not just language and quality. We want
But, we get this…
We can’t see what commentary is by who, etc…
And that’s exactly the case now! Ah… sorry if my first example is confusing but it shows exactly what is put as “title” in your tracks.
If it shows random info in my case, it’s because this is the actual title of this audiotrack… precisely why I don’t want this. Kill me if I have to correct/edit every bad title from each track of every single movie of my library.
Not sure if I explain well (english isn’t my first langage), but here you have a screen from MKVToolnix with the movie of my first post:
And a screen from “Get info” in Plex:
You can clearly see “Title” and then “Display Title”.
And as you can see, it shows the actual title of my track, which is what you asked for ? With your movie Man with a Movie Camera for example, Plex will now show “Commentary by…” or “Score by” or “whatever is your title” for each track.
Hum, you might need to recreate a new server from scratch to make this happen tho. My older server which is running for almost a year still works like before. But my new one (1 week old) does take account of tracks titles now.
.
Same goes for audio. No descriptions…

That’s basically always been the case… We want that on the pre-play screen so we can make a decision to what track we want without the “get-info”. Not to mention we can’t us get-info from streaming devices and such…
Alright. Well, I have no idea how I managed to “trigger” this feature. For both our sakes, I really wish I could. My PMS is v1.13.8.5388 for Windows 10 and Beta (not public) if that can help.
And for my “get-info” screen, I just wanted to point out that the “Display Title” (so the pre-play screen title) is mostly based on the “Title” (which is based on the description of the track). Well, at least on my plex server.
A (way) better example of how it’s supposed to work:
My show on toolnix:
On the pre-play screen of Plex:
Ahh, thanks. I think this is the key here.
I’ll check it out later.
Well… Had some time and tried v1.13.9.5439 (PlexPass) and was still not able to see it… But I did find a bug with the initial setup process. You will not have the option to download betas from the update channel if you do not sign-in at the initial setup page after install.
Damn, I deleted my new server to figure this out.
I tried to create a new one with v1.13.9.5439 Public AND Beta, then went back to v1.13.8.5388 again… Whatever I do, It doesn’t show descriptions anymore.
It’s really weird. My screens prove this feature was there at some point. Are we missing something? Or did Plex just leave this feature behind? I am clueless now. My apologies for giving you false hope.
No big deal… At least we found a BUG with the initial setup.
Its an absolute joke that this hasn’t been implemented after 5 years.
/u/wellslogan posted a way to show the track titles in PMP on reddit.
The relevant source code starts at line 5730:9 of main-1-<whatever>.js (at time of writing, on PMP 3.77.2):
n.displayTitle||n.language;Patching this to be:
n.title||n.displayTitle||n.language;makes the title of the audio track take precedence over the display title and the language!
@sixones
Any comment on this?
This is starting to become more important for me too. I tend to rip all English audio and subtitle tracks, so that I later have access to commentaries and the like. However, it’s nigh on impossible to select the correct one later.
Needs to be available in the ‘before play’ screen on pretty much all clients (web, Android, Samsung TV etc.)

This feature needs to be added. The metadata titles for tracks are incredibly important, especially for silent films with multiple scores.
So much feedback from the community on a simple change yet nothing from the staff…
Incredibly disappointing, I guess they need to focus all of their attention on commercializing Plex more, rather than working on what made it great to start.
