I would like to see how many unplayed episodes there are in TV series. I can’t see that being difficult given that you already do that in the “TV Shows” section
Items in the watchlist are by defintion unwatched.
That may be the plan but that’s not the case. I’ve watched every episode of Yellowstone (for example) yet it is still on the list because of future episodes scheduled on streaming services…to which I have ZERO subscriptions and desire a way to turn those off.
So I can’t tell at a glance which shows are waiting for me to watch.
Now that I made all the streaming services go away (i.e. no future ‘unwatched’ episodes), shows with no unwatched episodes remain on the watchlist…so your supposition that ‘Items in the watchlist are by defintion unwatched’ is not true.
Rossdillon is correct. I’ve watched every episode of HELLO TOMORROW and it remains in my watchlist. Need some indicator that tells us this show has unwatched episodes on the SERIES view not within the show’s detail view.
Nice callout. You all are correct - it is possible to have something in your watchlist that has been watched (and this applies for either movies or all episodes of a show). There are some good reasons for this that relate to future features that we haven’t gotten to yet.
As for this feature request, we have an internal discussion going regarding badging internally and I will bring this topic up as part of that conversation as it sounds like a nice addition to consider.
I just wanted to add, that if this could be looked at, and the feature changed/tweaked, that would be great.
My “not so young” father-in-law (Manage User) struggles to use all the filtering tools in Plex. So to make things easier for him, I update his Watchlist with things for him to watch. But items are not being removed, once watched, which is confusing him.
I didn’t realise that items could stay in a watchlist if future episodes “may be aired”, and though I can see this as a nice thing for folk, I’d rather forgo this as I’d like the Watchlist to self tidy up. Plus I find that the Continue Watching (aka On Deck), will fill in any gaps as/when shows if I add new items to my PMS.
As a side note, knowing if a show has “new to be aired” episodes is quite a nice thing. I’ve often wanted a way to view Plex items and know if (a) the show has now ended, (b) a show is continuing… With the way the current Watchlist works, it seems you could do this very easily?
Hey @Minxster thanks for the post. I was curious about your use case for your father-in-law. Are the items that are not being removed shows or movies? Ongoing shows has been discussed here a bit, but if it is movies I am interested in understanding as in most cases, watched titles drop off of the watchlist. If it is movies is it possible that these have also been previously watched by him/that account?
Hi @McWanke it was “some” but not all movies and shows. As for the movies, no, they’d not been previously watched. I’m trying to curate what he’s watching, so he’d defiantly not watched them before
He’s not actually watched any movies for a while though as he’s plodding his way through a mountain of shows just now

@McWanke out of interest, my father-in-law just finished watching the TV show “Strike Back”. All seasons are watched, and all episodes are available and watched… But it’s till showing in the Watchlist, so I’ve had manually remove it…
@McWanke, just letting you know that another TV show has had all episodes watched, but is still in the Watchlist (the show has “ended”). For reference, my father-in-law still hasn’t watched any films yet, so I can’t comment yet on the state-of-play there.
@McWanke just had another show not auto-remove from the Watchlist. Plex knows both seasons are watched in full, and the show ended in 2018.
@McWanke So we finally have a film that has had a problem with not auto-removing from the Watchlist.
You’ll see it’s actually “watched” but is still in the list. I did note that when I navigated through to my server, it was classed as watched, but if I re-entry the Watchlist it wasn’t marked as watched.
Curious if Plex has made any progress on this…
So I’m back here again to find out what’s happening with this. It has become tedious to have to manually look at playback history and manually remove films from my farther-in-laws watchlist!
If I didn’t have Tautulli to see the exact watch history, this would all be almost impossible!!!
I get the notion of maybe not removing a TV series that’s “on-going”, but again, I ask for an option to just saw “remove from watch list if the user has caught up to all items currently available on Plex”. To that end, I make sure to keep “Weeks to consider for Continue Watching” set to a very large figure, currently (basically) 3 years; just in case they go on hiatus for a year or so.
This just baffles me as to why we’re still seeing this issue?! Is it something like “when you add something to the watch list, if it’s available for free from Plex Streaming, it’s in the back-end database differently?!”. I don’t think this is the case at all, but I’m just desperate for a dev to just go and see what the fudge is going on.
For those having this issue, we’ve been waiting for rather a long time I’m literally thinking if I have time to write, debug, test and then run my own script(s) to sort something out
I’m literally thinking if I have time to write, debug, test and then run my own script(s) to sort something out
Surely @McWanke there has to be some light at the end of the tunnel. And sorry for just tagging you in again, but you’re the last staff member to comment on all of this.
Pretty sure Plex has lost any interest in helping current users…just adding more useless features to attract new, unwitting customers. They introduced an audio sync problem ages ago and still haven’t fixed it. I now use Infuse as my viewer and given up on Plex for watching anything. Infuse doesn’t ahve anyof those “cool” features and file management is crap, but it’s still a much better experience than Plex has become.
Being able to see which episode is watched/unwatched in the playlist would be very convenient. I have some very long playlists and it can be bothersome to figure out which episode I’m at, also navigating from episode to watchlist is not very user friendly either since it takes you back to the top of the playlist.
A related but slightly different request is also to be able to filter for shows that have unwatched episodes, exactly as you can in the TV Library panel.
